Grey Ratsnake has mites.

kfisher29 Nov 27, 2008 03:08 PM

Hi my 18 inch grey rat has little black mites and it's been at least 12 years since I've had mites on any of my snakes so I was looking for some info on safely getting rid of these things. Sorry no ratsnake pics. Thanks,Kevin Fisher

Provent-A-Mite is a good product, but keep it away from the hognose. They do not do well with it. It will really mess them up.

Here are the detailed steps for using Nix. I have used NIx in the past, and it was a safe treatment for my Rat Snakes.

Now you need to ask yourself where the mites came from. If you are buying life prey animals to feed your snakes, there is a good chance they came with the mouse. And, no, snake mites do not live on mice, but they will hide in the boxes that they put the mouse in to goive it to you. I don't know hpw many snakes you have, but if you find them on one, treat them all.

I will get some of that Nix too. I beleive the mites came from the local pet store where I've been getting live crawlers for the ratsnake. The rest of my animals are either brumating in another room or off feed. I've checked my other snakes multiple times and no sign of any mites yet. Thanks,Kevin

Off topic, but that's a good looking speckled king. I have a female that looks like your animal. One of my favorite kings.

I have had best success, i.e. 100% elimination by dusting (carefully) with SEVIN. Just dust the entire snake with a small amount of "Sevin" powder applied with a small soft paint brush and allow the snake to move through your hands to obtain good coverage without getting a lot of dust in the nostril area. Sanitize entire cage about every 10 days for 3 times to insure that any mites that hatch are also treated.
