Rudicollis eggs

jasper2 Nov 27, 2008 03:25 PM

After eleven days of digging and getting thinner I couldn't take it anymore and I injected her with oxytocine this afternoon.
Within one hour she started laying eggs. So far 8 of them.
they are solid white and huge, 24 grams a piece. They are looking very good/fertile. I'll post some pictures of them tomorrow.
I will adjust the nestingsite for the next clutch. I am very happy this intervention worked (so far).

Could you post pictures? Do you think the eggs are fertile?
Where did you hear, to use this type of 'intervention' and are there any other known instances of it being used?

I think he egs are fertile. The injection is pretty standard in a lot of animals, I just wasn't if it would work in monitors.

Thanks for posting the pics. It's the first I've heard of the use of this injection in egg laying reptiles. It'll be interesting to see how many eggs hatch and if your female show any signs of negative reactions to the experience. Good luck!

I have used it hundreds of times with monitors, turtles and tortoises and a few iguanas.
Works great if for some reason the eggs are causing trouble, or the female just wont lay and you do not want the eggs to go bad in her. Its not the "right" way to do it, best is to actually provide a suitable nesting but some females just wont lay in ANYTHING or start laying in the water so you remove her into dirt and she stops(turtles). Put her in water and she pops out a few more. Back and forth, etc
If you inject her with oxytocin, shell lay them controllable in the dirt, she just wont nest them.
it works on pretty much any animal

Best of luck to you, I hope they all hatch!

Wow! Congratulations and good luck on the incubation! Keep us posted. If you produce some truly CBB V. rudicollis, and were willing to sell some, I'd be very interested. No easy feat what you've done here but it isn't over yet! Keep up the good work!
