Transport box

Upscale Nov 28, 2008 11:07 AM

Nice box- 16” x 12” with a window on top. Double layer of plexiglass, inside and out for viewing if little devil has gotten out of the bag.

Nice big door. I put an extra lip around the inside edge so there is no escape even if the door is not fully seated, there’s a half inch fudge factor. (If the lock is too small, there is play around the hasp thingy)

There is a little tab built into the door to enable mounting the hasp this way.
The other half of the hasp mounted on top becomes a door handle that you could open with a hook real easy.

Double plexi window. Probably overkill, but I had the scraps laying around and well…
Practiced drilling air holes without cracking the plastic. Maybe learned something- go slow.

And what will YOU do with four days off?

Happy holiday- thanks for looking!

Wow, really nice job. I like the hasp doing double duty as a hook ring.

I am surprised you were able to drill the plexi with a standard drill bit. We ended up getting several bits reground just for this purpose.

Nothing picture worthy to show for my days off.

VERY Nice job!

Thanks for the heavily detailed descriptions too. Making my husband look at this.

Really nice box. I assume it's for hots, right? I don't know much about hots, there's no way my wife will let me get into them. She's pretty understanding about the snakes, we have over 160 of them to include big burms, but she draws the line on venomous.

Your right about going slow when drilling plexy. I have drilled numerous cage doors and haven't cracked any by going slow.

Nice work. Unfortunately my four days off were spent recovering from a nasty cold. I'm still getting over it.

For what it is worth, I have seen regulations for transporting venomous that require all screws to be concealed when the box is closed and locked. These are not regulations everywhere but at least one state has such a rule in place. One of the airlines that used to ship venomous had a similar rule.

Back when I kept hots a lot of people built boxes like yours but had the lid shut and close over the entire top. There was a cutout in the lid that allowed viewing but still covered the screws. The hasp can be mounted in a way so that when it is flipped down it covers the screws on its flange.

You did not specifically mention venomous but I thought I'd throw it out there for others to read.

I do have the required permit for Florida. I’m pretty sure the rules are to have a box that is snake proof, not idiot proof. You can always use some tools and get into any cage or box. I always leave the key right in the lock, in fact one of my transport boxes has the key mounted on a wire so it can’t get lost, it is always right there. Technically, it meets the requirements for being locked. We are also required to label the box, identify contents, put a warning, lock it and keep the snake in a bag while transporting. I think if someone ignores the warning, deliberately unlocks and opens the box, the associated liability has been transferred to them. Quite often a small snake will be in a deli cup type of container that is taped up real good, then put in a bag for compliance, and then in the box.

Here’s a couple of pictures of a little box I made (will probably never even use it) that was too small to get a plastic container in the door, so I made the bigger one. Then I have a real big one that I bought, which is no better than what I have built.

This shows the way I label the box. I can slip a little paper label inside this zip lock bag thing. I have a Word document with these text boxes sized just right to print whatever I’ll be transporting. Works pretty good. I could probably upload that file if anybody would want to check it out or use it.
Note the “See details on reverse of this packing slip”

This shows the back of the label- the warning, scientific and common name, permit holder and phone number. All this is required here.

I would definitely recommend complying with all relevant authority when transporting, shipping and keeping venomous reptiles, and knowing the rules in any other state or whatever if they will be involved. And stay off the evening news.

Hope you get better Chris!

It was definitely not Florida that had the requirements. I was looking to transport a decent sized venomous collection halfway across the country and it was one of the states I was going to be traveling through. A zoo curator somewhere warned me about it.

It was that period of time after 9-11 when venomous shipping came to a halt and nobody knew when it would resume. Fortunately I worked out another deal that was nearby and the trip never happened.

At any rate, just pointing it out in case somebody else read the thread and was thinking about building their own. There are some bizzare and little heard of laws out there about transporting animals.

Writing this makes me realize how much I miss some of those snakes.

That plywood is pretty cool looking with the contrasting layers, hmmm…
I can’t imagine how that is routed without tear out.

Did you know you helped inspire this project? Remember the transport box I built over Thanksgiving weekend where you mentioned hot boxes requiring that all screws be concealed? Ha ha- I knew right then I was going to have to build something better!
Thanks for all your input on here Chris!
