Friday herping in South Texas..

RioBravoReptiles Nov 28, 2008 01:59 PM

11/28/2208.. I was working again near the southernmost point in Texas today.. and found this Opheodrys at about 11:00AM.. I saw also an Indigo snake and a Ruthveni whipsnake on the levee (no photos)
.

.
.. yes, that is my pretty white Toyota truck in the background! .. here's a better look.
.

.
.. here's more of that snake..
.

.

.
... that was a treat for me, we don't see those a lot here. When I'm in east Texas or visiting my brother in Wilson county I can turn them up regularly.... This is pretty much how I see most things.. I go out and spend time in the habitat.. (and keep a camera handy).
.
This photo was taken Thanksgiving morning.. (yesterday).
.

.
I went out for a walk while the turkey was tanning in the oven!.
.
Have fun, be safe!

That rough green is smoking!!! Those guys are really underated. I lived in east texas all my life and only caught two. Spent most of my time deep in the woods next to creeks too doing land surveying. Kevin

Hey thanks!! I love those snakes too. the locals refer to them as 'Alicantes'.. I'm pretty good with Spanish but can't directly translate that to English..

Be good.

I was curious so I did a bit of web surfing. The only useful definition of Alicante I can find says it means a poisonous snake. That's odd for Opheodrys although Pituophis are also known by that name in Mexico. Strange?

Not really. For some reason, many people think ALL green colored snakes are venemous.

My grandfather lives in Jalisco MExico and hes always telling me stories about alicantes. He says that they are venomous. I think that the majority of the people that live out in the country like that would think that just about every snake is dangerous.

...Also typical of the more rural areas of the southern Us, where every snake near water is a deadly "Water Moccasin'! LOL

"Alicantes" seems to be a colloquialism.. or a term that is understood somewhat locally, but otherwise has no direct translation..
.
I run into this frequently in Mexico.. for instance if you are looking for any of the larger Geckoes (especially Eublepharids) in Mexico.. the locals often refer to them as 'Escorpios', from their habit of elevating and waving their tails when threatened... they know real scorpions are 'alacranes'.. it's a (linguistic) jungle out there!
.
Thanks.

Gus,

Watch your step! LOL Lot's of cacti there, actually the fields near my cousins house look pretty much like that!
As for Greenies, they are the 2nd most common snake up here in North Central Texas, after Earth Snakes ( some lbj or other.., more common than earthworms).
You are still rubbing it in man. Weather is cool & dreary.

Nice looking vehicle. Had a gray one like it, really wish I had never traded it off. They will go just about anywhere and I got pretty decent mileage.

Nice pics, now chance of finding an animal in the wild here unless it is out due to illness. Temps are in the mid 40's
