Another nest and three more hatchlings

Moedad Nov 28, 2008 02:32 PM

We had some rain two nights ago and today I found a second nest with 3 more hatchlings. Two were out of the nest and one was still in it, although completely out of his egg. From what I could see by the egg shells, there were only the three in this clutch. Now I have EIGHT 3-toe babies.

Great news-good luck with them

However, unless you intend to become a breeder of box turtles (most states don't allow it), you may want to seperate the males and females-or you'll have many more. With overcrowding comes stress and illness.

Please post a picture soon, Tess

I hope you're happy about that. Your post reads like you may be a little "shell shocked", bwahahaha.

Seriously, though, I think it's great. I'm all for captive propagation, provided that you can either care for all of them or find them homes. Since you are from CA, you should have no problems with legality or placing them into caring hands. I would encourage you to headstart them. Many prospective keepers are leaning more towards CB juveniles over WC adult box turtles.
