Incubation.. Natural or Incubator

Jaymiller242 Nov 29, 2008 10:53 AM

I would like to know how many of you let the mother stay on her eggs to incubate them and do you have good luck doing that? I went on a trip this summer, July and when I returned I had a snake on 9 eggs and never had a clue she was gravid. Anyways I couldnt seperate the eggs so I left her with them because I was guessing mother nature told her right where to position the clutch in her tub for best results. Anyways 2 months later 5 hatched out and I think she killed the other 4 over time as she layed on them time after time. Got 1.4 from the clutch but they were just normals. Guess it would pay to buy an incubator and seperate her from the eggs immedately so she will start eating again huh. Thanks for any input and ideas.

I've done it both ways - the only clutch I lost through maternal incubation the female crawled off the eggs and never went back -- so I moved them to the incubator and they died -- they could have been duds to begin with which may be why she didn't go back -- I don't know -- otherwise I've had really good success with maternal. I've also had good success with the incubator -- lost a couple of clutches in the learning process but you learn more from your failures than your successes, right? LOL.

Good luck on your next batch.
