RATS RAISED OUTDOORS

mugencrx Nov 29, 2008 05:20 PM

I was wondering if its possible to raise rats out doors? Like on a front porch, it is partially enclosed but not all the way. What I was thinking is taking a big tub, filling it with substrate, and then putting a metal lid on it? Is this possible? Or will they freeze to death? please tell me as much as you can on this matter. Thanks in advance -Matt

The front porch is rather public but it could be done. Our rats
here in OK are raised in near outdoor conditions..Weather will play a part in production of course. With some planning anything is possible..G-pigs are not productive enough to raise as food items and they are the most personable of the rodents..You'll have to weigh out your own needs and abilities but it's possible.

I live in pa is it possible? People said about the water freezing up so I was thinking slices of apples would do the trick for them

Rats are pretty sensitive to temperature, and don't really have a lot of fat/insulation against the cold.
I'd stick to keeping them inside.
