wood chips/shavings for mice

mugencrx Nov 30, 2008 02:36 PM

My family owns a tree removal business and I was wondering if I could use the wood chips as the substrate for my breeding colony of mice I am starting. I figured it would cut down on cost, and thats what breeding your own feeders is all about, saving money. Let me know if you think this will work. Also when a male and female breeds, how long after the breed will the female have pups? Is it okay to feed them dog food?

I don't recommend it, unless you plan to kiln dry the chips. Too much chance of getting all kinds of bugs mixed in with the chips and you do have to stay away from cider chips.

Also, depending on the size of the chips, they will make burrowing and nesting more difficult.

That would be foolish. You could make a lot of problems for yourself. You could even end up with sick mice and even sick or dead snakes. It isn't worth it. The Harlen Shredded Aspen is by far the best, that is all I use.

yep..trees make WET wood chips...you need DRY wod chips

dog food ok ...no red....

....you setup mice and about a month or so later you'll get babies......

....kill all after 6 months of breeding and start over....(keep females to start over ahead of time)
