They have their own plans

sean1976 Dec 02, 2008 12:19 AM

Well tonight when I was getting ready to feed Navel and Brunhilde so I set them aside and started cleaning the cage and getting out the feeding tubs. After laying out the feeding tubs I open the hide to find the two of them getting it on right there. Apparently they decided not to wait to be cooled or anything like that and just started going at it despite my plans lol.

Needless to say I decided to place the hide back in the cage and leave food to another day/time. One thing that surprised me was that I found another hemipenile shed in the water dish today. I didn't think they dropped more then one each season. Is this unusual or pretty common? Looks like I may have some babies in a few months

There ya go, they know what's best??

Males will drop se]veral hemipenal sheds over the breeding season. Some (many??) left where they dry up into crusty lumps you might not notice.

Oh yeah, from here I'd note tail wraps, visual copulations and female sheds. Once the male stops any actiivity with her for several weeks, they should be done and the semi recent shed will be the POS. May be one or two sheds during the breeding process before she ovulates. IMO the male courting her is what induces the ovulation. Each one triggering the other into individual breeding activities.

I'll definitely keep a close eye on them whenever possible to try and record all that. Would be nice to have a decent estimate on delivery date lol. Thanks for the info and reminders. This just gives me one more reason to hurry and get my next set of racks delivered so I can clear the hatcling rack for later this year.

Great news. Good luck, I'm sure the babies will be super nice given the looks of Mom and Dad!

Thanks,
Ed

I'm hoping they favor their Dad's looks but we'll see. I am planning on keeping them at least a couple months after birth in order to get a better idea of what they will color up into. Especially since I think three will be staying locally given I will probably hold one back, a friend who quaruntines for me wants one from the first clutch, and another close friend is sure her wife will want one. Either way should be fun to see how it all turns out.
