My '08 male black necked garter finally ate a scented pinky!! HOOO HOO!! I would rather it had been a f/t but,after wasting several of those I decided to try a live one and Voila!! Jeff

I will give that a try as soon as my next mouse litter is born.

That will be plenty soon too, 4 preggo moms ready to pop any day now.

I was one of the lucky ones ... my two females took f/t pinks within a week of getting them from Mojo. They continue to eat like champs. Happy to hear you captured your male back and even better that he took the live pinky.

Yes sir! First year apprentice!! Just trapped a 28 ounce male. Not many passage hens around so I took him and we
should have a ball. Should be fun flying him.
The few days after we trapped him and banded him, I looked out in the backyard where he was teathered in the pen. Take a look at what is sitting on top of the cage! A very large immature female. The bird that I drove over 1200 miles looking to trap. Now she's sitting on the cage and I thought I heard her laugh!

Steve,That is some cool stuff!I've always loved raptors and the red tails are probably my favorites.I know a guy who lives near Richmond Va. who got into falconry several years ago and it's pretty much his life now!lol!There's a whole lot more to it than I ever realized. Beautiful animal!! Jeff

My blackneck girl (MoJo) ate her FIRST pink today.

I gave her 2 blacknose dace minnows in her water bowl, 1 pinky plopped in the dish with the minnows, and checked later, all is gone.

Congratulations Wayne! I'm happy for you that she ate a pinky!I can't wait for mine to take unscented pinkies!My wife decided that "we" should hang onto the eastern hog I mentioned earlier.That will probably be short lived since she isn't a snake person.I'll let you know later in the year! She has ate 2 pinks now, and neither were scented.

I put one minnow and one pinky in the water bowl, leave her alone for a bit, and presto GONE.

The other day I had the pleasure of watching the second one get ate.

On the Hoggie note, I'd rather see it warmer out for shipping anyhow.

I love seeing people working with blacknecks!
A couple of tips:
You probably know this, but blacknecks prefer amphibians over fish any day.
If you can scent with frog, toad, or salamander, they will eat readily.
I had some frozen toads, and cut tiny bits of skin from them and put it on the mouse's nose. this usually worked.
You can also buy frozen "silversides" from a petshop. They are marine minnows, but blackneck garters will usually eat them.
Lastly, wet fish-flavored cat food will often work, too.
