brumating corns. where?

stormwulf133 Dec 02, 2008 09:52 PM

Ok, so I am going to make my adults take a 3 month nap. I don't have much of a choice of where. I know someone said they had no problems at just below 70 degrees but most go much lower. The only place that gets any lower than 68 in my house, is the garage. Is this safe? We park a car in there, what about fumes? I am not worried about temps, they seem to be ok. Also, what size tubs do you guys use for your corns?

Rather than risk exposing the snakes to potentially dangerous car fumes in the garage, I'd check the temperatures on the floor in the house near outside walls - it probably is colder than you think.

Having said that, I have a two-car garage and one car. I brumated turtles and baby snakes in it last winter with no problems. I'm doing the same routine again this year, though most of my adult snakes brumate in the basement.

As far as tubs, most people I know brumate snakes in the same cages that they keep then in. If you were buying something for the snakes, something with about 16 x 20 inches of floor space would be fine.

We have finished basement. It is no where near 50 or 60 degrees. In fact due to all the other reptiles down there, with all the heat tape, ceramic emitters etc, its fairly comfortable lol. But you had no problem with the garage? I mean its not like people come and go more than once per day. Its a two car garage with one car. I park outside.

Did you actually take a themometer, put it on the floor and see what the temperature was?
Corn snakes do not need to be cooled down very much - there are some breeders who do not cool their corns at all.
Like I said, I've brumated reptiles in my garage, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Tim I am one of the guys that really dont cool mine at all. just what ever the temp is in the house 70-73 normally being im in central florida. My clutch sizes have went from 10 to 17 in just 3 years.

I did NOT put a thermometer on the floor. What I did do is use a temp gun . I am not just brumating to breed but also to not have to feed the hungry little guys for a few months lol. Will dropping them only to 70 or so allow me to do this?

I think 70 is a bit too warm not to feed them. I think your garage option would be better. I reckon the warmest that I'd brumate corns would be 65 degrees and if you're not getting that in the house then I'd move them into the garage.
