African Clawed Frogs bred...

KaioSama Sep 08, 2003 04:49 PM

Hi, I was given a pair of what I've just discovered to be African Clawed Frogs in April. They were housed with a tiger salamander for years before i received them and sadly the salamander died a month ago. Two nights ago i walked in to see them breeding. How long before the eggs are laid and what do I have to do to ensure they survive? Also, I'm not exactly sure they have the best setup. They were given to me in a 10 gallon tank with this big black sort of under gravel filter that shoots water out really fast and an airstone. I've since put them in a 20 gallon. But still, is this the proper equipment needed for them? I also just read someone asking about Ph levels and know nothing about those things. I've just been using tap water as was my neighbor when she had them. Any help would be greatful. I've been trying to find information on them but can't seem to find much.

Thanks,
Adam

How do you know if they were breeding? Was one gripping the other above the rear legs? Do you know that you have a male and a female? Sometimes a male will attempt to mate with another male. If you have eggs they will be yellowish and sink. I responded to your question on the frog section too.

Yes i have a small albino who does not have that cloacal extention where as the large green one does. And the male was holding her like that, and also last night I saw them doing it again.

Often my african dwarf frogs will grasp each other but not lay eggs. I'm not sure if Clawed frogs will do this too, so there is a chance you will have eggs.

If they were to lay eggs, they would be laid while they are grasping. The eggs would pop out and he would fertilize them as they come out.
