Creative Enclosures

AleshaRae Dec 03, 2008 03:08 PM

Just curious as to what enclosures everyone else has out there for their rainbows. I’ve seen a couple picture you all have posted, but they are rather simple yet understandable. Tending to 60 + snakes, simplicity not only makes for easy cleanup, but also guarantees a safe and sanitary dwelling for the lil guys and gals.

Since I do only have one (that is until im ready to find a mate :D) I wanted it to have a little more "oomph". If you have any pictures, links, input....please share!

Great question. I've also been wondering this too.

Scroll down towards the bottom of the page thread I started titled "Display Cages?".

There are a few there, not too many, most frequenters here I think are breeders with a lot of snakes and need simplicity and ease of cleaning way more than "pretty" lol!
I plan on building a small furniture-grade enclosure in the next few weeks using oak 1x's and oak paneling.
I'll post pics when it's done.

That was a great thread, very useful exchange of words there. Painting is a hobby of mine and had already planned on getting a little color happy with the background. I really enjoyed paulbuck’s design of the cage.
There is a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when building something from scratch. We too are in the process of completing a freestanding enclosure out of plywood and oak. Ok, maybe I didn’t have that big of a part in constructing this piece, but I do hope to bring it to life. Be sure to post when your's is finished!

Same here, thinking the BRB would use the water as a toilet. And knowing how nasty some of my pooped in water bowls get, I could just see it'd not be long before that water area was not so nice.

Very nice, I like the rocks you have layering the bottom and the abundant amount of water available for soaking. Thanks for the pictures.

I've had the idea of using PVC pipe constructions to make 'jungle gyms' for mine but have so far never gotten around to it. I'm sure that white and grey pipes aren't as decorative as you had in mind, haha. I also think plants would look great, something climbing like pothos or a philodendron or even orchids or bromeliads with that kind of humidity. Anapsid.org has a list of non-toxic plants, I bet a BRB would feel right at home with some tropicals native to south america.

I was kinda wanting there to be a more natural feel to the display. The PVC is just a little too industrial for my liking, but that website sure will come in handy when putting the finishing touches to his new home. Thank you for the suggestions.

On thing to look for is to hit thrift stores and flea markets...even home Depot/Lowe's etc and look for any kind of cabinets that catch your eye, it's usually pretty easy to take any of the solid panels out to replace the front one with glass/plexi.
Footlockers/Toyboxes are ideal, you can open from the top and put a piece of glass/plexi in front.

Another cool thing for aesthetics but also ease of cleaning is to put branches in, but don't set them on the floor, screw them in from the outside in off of the floor of the cage.
One of my mainstays that I used to do to my Monitor cages was to spray the interior with "Fleck Stone" spray paint or similar stone-looking spray paint, just make sure to clear-coat it extra good.
