Morph Education

Hey all,

I've been casually considering some boas to my collection of colubrids, but find myself a bit overwhelmed with all the morphs out there. Do any of you recommend a website, perhaps one of yours, that outlines exactly what the various morphs look like? Pics? Traits that are simple recessive/co-dominant? History of the trait? Etc...

I've seen some info on various sites, but I was hoping to se something a bit more comprehensive...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The Serpwidgets link is a good one, but it does not address dominant and codominant mutants. For breeding results with them, try the link to Markus Jayne's site.

The Genetics 101 link has a lot of mistakes. I cannot recommend it.

Thanks Paul. I wasn't aware of the mistakes you mentioned. That was the very first link I was given on Genetics, and have browsed through it here and there ever since. But if there are mistakes, I'll not recommend it anymore either. I try hard to only give out useful info.

I'll check out Markus Jayne's site this weekend though. I'm sure it has some good info if you are recommending it.

Thanks again!
Rick

I always enjoyed Class Reptilia for a website that has pictures and explanations of many Morph Boa constrictors.
Last I checked the website was down for improvements.

When I started I went through page after page on the kingsnake classifieds to get familiar with the different morphs. That may help in addition to the good advice already given.

I agree with Sidviciouser statement here as well. In fact this is what used to do to familiarize myself with Morph Boas. Go through page after page in the classifieds. Then if a website link is available go to that website and look at any other pictures with labels to continue to clarify in my mind what I'm looking at. I myself was not at all versed well read in genetics what so ever. I also found the reading about genetics confusing without any base knowledge to begin with. Once I learned the basic ideas of Hypo and how it worked at that time was more described as Codom or how Albino and Anery were recessive with Heterozygous(het Alb) & homozygous versions(visible Albino). I was at least able to gain a functioning idea of what was happening. Then later as I read about genetics the info made more sense. I could then start to use appropriate language to describe and understand how each genetic variation displayed itself.
