Our baby had her first shed, sexing

TracieInOhio Sep 08, 2003 05:23 PM

We've had her a little over 3 weeks, and she was doing great eating a pinky on Wednesdays.

Well, last Sunday, she started acting strange, staying in her hide all the time, she didn't even come out at night. We read a lot on the net and found that that would be normal if she was getting ready to shed, and we noticed that her eyes had gotten kind of blue. Then, last night she shed, I got up this morning and found her shed skin in the tank. It's all complete

Ok, so now the part that I saw somewhere... someone posted in the previous posts that if we take a shed skin and look closely at it, we can use it for accurately determining the sex. We're thinking she's a girl, obviously.

I haven't counted scales, I'm not sure exactly how to do that part. Just count them from the vent to the tip of the tail? And, what other information would be needed?

The other method someone said was to measure the entire skin and then the distance from the vent to the tip of the tail. In that case, it's 10 inches long total, and 1.5 inches from the vent to the tip.

Anyone care to give a guess? Hope it's a girl, since we named it Ginger!

Even if you probe a snake it's not 100% accurate. But probing is the best way.Ive seen people pop a snake and prolapse them and kill them.I would wait till the little guy gets some size to him and have someone probe him.Just an opinion...Paul.

That method is explained at:

It is not 100% accurate, but it IS 100% safe for your "baby."

Good luck.
