What material is it?

balisong Dec 04, 2008 07:52 PM

I have a baby snake rack system that was home made (not by me), but now the babies are getting ready for a larger enclosure. The rack system is made out of pieces of a white kind of plastic material, but it definitely is not plastic. It does not warp when heat is applied. Does anyone know what this might be?

Thanks.

Can you give a description of the plastic? Thickness? What does an exposed cut edge look like?

Or a picture of the rack if you have one.

Here's a photo. It's about a quarter of an inch thick.

Hard to say from just that picture.

If you look at a cut edge closely does it look like the interior of the material has some texture to it? Sort of like a very dense foam?

And then there are two very thin skins on each face of the material?

No, it's all one solid, smooth piece with slots cut for shelves. The shelves look like glue is holding them together.

I noticed that on each side there is 1 hole, but they could have been made to run wires through.

Really hard to say what it is then.

If you live near a plastic distributor they might be able to figure out what it is.

Are you wanting to build cages or racks for your growing snakes? If cages, how big? If racks, what sized tub?

I'm looking to build a rack that could house about 10 adult corn snakes.

The problem though is trying to find the right material that can take the heat. Most employees at home improvement stores turn pale as a ghost when I tell them that the heat is important for the snakes.

The only rack building material you'll find at Home Depot is melamine coated particle board. Unfortunately the stuff they sell by the full sheet is not very good. You might find some melamine shelving that is higher quality.

I hit enter too soon.

What I was going to say is that I would probably recommend a 1/2" plastic for any cage or rack you might built. So even if you knew what your rack is made of there might still be better materials.
