Heating/Lighting...?

Wavlyn Sep 08, 2003 06:02 PM

What type of heating is best, heat lamps or heat pads. I already know heat rocks are evil, but the guy at the pet shop said that heat pads burn the snake too. It's a Reptile-only shop, so they should know what they're talking about, but I've read everywhere that heat pads are fine...

Also, do snakes need UV light? I've heard most reptiles need it for UVB light, but snakes and some turtles don't. I just want to know if I really need one, since I'm rather poor at the moment and they're a good $100. I may be able to get the money off my parents, but they wouldn't be happy.

Eh, also, I've heard about these sausage things that you could use instead of mice. I personally aren't squeamish about the mice, but my mother refuses to have them in her freezer. I'm just wondering if anyone actually uses them and if they're any good...

Whee! Lotsa questions...

I use heat pads.Just check them once and awhile and you shouldnt have a problem.I dont use expensive uvb bulbs on anything except my tortoise.I have tried those sausage link things and couldnt get anything i own to eat them. That's not all true my dog snacked on one.If your close to the petshop just buy live and make them go sleepy before you feed.I prefer frozen because i have seen mice with snake mites crawling on them.Whatever you do make sure your enclosure is 100% snakeproof.Your snake guy can recommend something im sure.Good Luck...Paul.

You can always keep the frozen mice in a cooler in your room, just remember to change the ice in it (or get one that plugs into the wall) then your mom won't have anything to complain about. (course the plug in type coolers are usually around $50)
