I'll come out of lurking to answer that.

It depends on what *beginner* means. Some beginners are clumsy and uninformed, while others are well informed, have read up on their choice, and have everything ready when the lizard arrrives. All monitors need their own particular types of cages, diet, food, heat and vet care. You can't vary from it or the animal will go nuts with stress or get sick. I'd say a good beginners' monitor is one that you read up on and can take good care of.

Beginners tend to go for the less expensive lizards, and Niles, though cheap, are definately not beginners' lizards. Check out Ackies and Savannas (Bosc Monitors).

Be ready to provide mice and other prey for the next 15 years.

Roger
