100 het albino male

mugencrx Dec 06, 2008 04:42 PM

I acquired a 1100 gram male 100 het for albino proven through a trade. My question is if I breed him to a normal female, can they produce albinos? or just hets? Or do I need to breed him to another het or albino female to get albino hatchlings?

Unless you get really lucky and your normal female ends up being a het that you didn't know about, you'll have to breed him to either a het female or an albino female to get albinos. If you breed him to a normal then all of the babies will have a 50% chance of being het for albino.

Albino is a recessive gene, the same way that Clown, Ghosts, and Axanthics (among other recessive morphs) are recessive morphs. To put it in the simplest terms, to produce the visual version of the morph, the genes for that morph would have to be present in both parents to produce visual babies. So yes, your Het Albino male would have to be bred to an Albino Female or Het Albino Female in order to make Albinos.

Hope that helps!!

I just noticed you asked the same thing below about Clowns. The way you make Clowns is the same for Albinos. You probably should start doing some research and reading before you start breeding. Genetics are pretty basic and important. Buy a book. VPI's book outline almost every morph out there. Plus it'll tell you what to expect when breeding and the time tables from lock to lay, etc. Good luck!

It is true, even if there is not a breeder close by, you can probably find someone on here who is willing to answer all those questions in e-mails. Definitely go to vpi.com and look into ordering their book, it is well worth the $75, and then you can get a really good idea of what things are going to look like, before you invest time and money into making that morph.
Even if you choose not to find an experienced breeder to work with, it is ridiculously important that you learn how to make a punnet square.
I am not sure if anyone else posted Ralph Davis' page on punnet squares up here, but it is pretty good
http://ralphdavisreptiles.com/matrix/squares.asp
Give that a shot.
Seriously though, if you really want to get it all down, go out on your own, find a list of dominant, co-dom and recessive traits (they are all readily available at the snake keeper website, NERDs website, and others), after that learn how to make really really messed up punnet squares that involve snakes with that each carry 1-4 genes. It will make your head explode, but it well worth it, and is one of the most invaluable skills a snake breeder can have. If you do not know what a punnet square is, find a basic biology book, it will have a whole chapter on them, and how to do them.

Look at it this way. Consider Het to mean Half. So your snake has Half of what it needs to make albinos. You need another snake to breed with that has aleast half(het) also to make a whole(albino.

........new people are fun huh???

......most of the people in here aren't as time tested as they think.........

balls are easy to breed...

.......so.......new people should ask a breeder near them all the stuff they need to know???.......local people ahte that even more........I know....everyone that finds me bugs the snot out of me then buys snakes elsewhere most of the time after they take up my time.........so local guy doesn't want them either...

THIS is the place to ask......

.......I had noone to ask at first......not snakes but other animals....I had just bits and pieces of info I got from a few people that bred stuff I had......we did what we could and actually taught ourselves alot by trial and error......as for snakes....I did bug local guy.....asked stuff for 3 hours on 2 separate trips....he moved to FL then a month or so after I met him.......we talked alot on phone for awhile....and it didnt take long for people to ask my opinion.....I didn't forget stuff and learned alot on my own again with snakes.....I was pretty good at it........

......I do snakes cause I like snakes (and rodents)......and I do it because I like genetics....even in school ,....probably the only classes I aced......also I was impressed when I met a few guys around 1990.....they used words like amelanistic and anerythristic and all kinds of big words....real smart guys.....oh...they were 14 at the time and one was 10....!!.......(yes he is close to genius or better)....the one kid is still my friend....we learn alot with each other and older friends old school experiences.....the one 14 year old is now 34......(he was free handling cobras at 14)......

....so.....

what do I want......???????.......ask....ask good stuff......normal stuff.....you can learn by reading this crap in here everyday.....and.....BUY SOME BOOKS!,......

......I still say.....Richard Ross' Keeping and Breeding Boas and Pythons.....good book......then buy some others......don't buy them for the pictures.....but the words......

...good luck.....

... that is not so offensive to you. People have spent years (and some their lives) pouring work into their snakes. They have learned from trial & error, from experience, and from reading, reading, reading. And this is the reason why you are getting the harsh responses.

Its insulting (and annoying) when people jump on here just blasting of questions that they're honestly not trying for. Everyone gave you plenty of references (Ralph Davis's Website, NERD's Website, VPI's book, Kevin McCurly's book, etc), when you can even easily Google these questions or do a forum search. You would not believe how informative (though unorganized) a Kingsnake Forum Search can be.

So basically, people aren't going to respond well to simple questions when everyone here has done their work and research for their snakes, and you're expecting everyone to just tell you. Trust me, there really are no stupid questions, and there are so many nice people in this hobby that want to help and spread knowledge. But no one wants to help someone that won't help themselves and won't do their fair share of homework.

I hope you don't jump all over me. I am local and willing to help you with your questions if you PM me. Maybe than you can see it from our side of the table, and understand why people aren't responding well.

Cuz trust me, no one really hates newbies. But people do hate takers. And lazy @$$e$.

I agree with you Im sure there are many members here that have poured their whole life into their snakes, and breeding. Im not questioning the fact that some of my questions may come off as annoying to some members or pure laziness, but if thats the way they feel thats okay by me but just dont be ignorant to me in my threads

illbeyoursoldier Dec 06, 2008 11:08 PM

But I think if you cool off and come back to the post later you'll realize a lot of people weren't trying to be mean, rude, or ignorant. They were just giving you a reality check -- and now you know, and you're probably better off with it. Words come off way more harsh typed on a white computer screen. Just cause someone isn't agreeing with you, doesn't mean they oppose you... Think about it.

And really, PM me if you have questions. And there was a Bob down there offering to help if you if you wanted it.
