a Q about rats

aboaslife Dec 06, 2008 07:42 PM

Hi I was on the boa forum and they were talking about zucker
rats. Does anyone know what the zucker rats are? They said they
were black and white hooded and that they have had problems with them being very fatty and causing problems with thier snakes
any input would be appreciated Thanks

A Zucker rat is an Obese rat, they genetically engineered them to test obesity. They have a recessive trait for obesity. Snakes don't need the fatty acids, muscular rats are key.

ok Thanks I have quite a few black hooded but for the most part they are lean every now and then I will get a litter that are slightly fatter than the others ill keep an eye out for those litters and wean out those breeders thank you one more Q so the diet would not matter then because its genetic right?

Yes diet matters.

Just like with Human's there is a genetic predisposition with Zucker rats towards obesity. All rats should be feed a quality feed, and provided room for exercise. Not being a zucker rat doesn't guarantee a low fat rat.
