old question, new user. JCP info and ?

bazzgazm Dec 07, 2008 03:07 PM

Anywho. I got my JCP And it's a great little guy. about 20-24inches and was told around 6-7months old. He's not so bad once he gets out but i've seen where he has his moods. I have him set up for now in a 10gallon and a 40gallon waiting.

the 10g has a large, flat waterdish. flexible artificial tree limbs varrying sizes, A fake plant that extends through it. then his hide on the other side.

I currently use a red 40w overtop to warm for daytime temperatures and at night i let them go down to 75. Durring the day i'll catch him up in the tree where the temp is approx. 85-88deg. rough 12 hour shift (waiting for timer) i wake up at 9, and turn the light off at 9pm when i go to bed. so far he seems fine with that and is learning the difference that it gets cooler at night.

so not only am i checking to see if i'm doing stuff right. I had a few curious questions which i've read responses too but hopefully after the months these have been posted, some of you who were asking can tell me your progress.

I reach in to get him in instantly draws back. no biggie... I make him aware that i'm there and grab him and i might get a hiss but he normally comes out.
then. i have him out and he seems totally explorative with his tail locked around my finger (usually climbs down to look at something but always keeps locked on)

So. on to the questions!!!
Have any of you determined better ways to break the nippyness in the last few months(since your posts are all months old)

and 2, I've read they can get more attitude prior to shedding. So i don't know what the standard eyes look like and i've had a hard time finding good pics of pictures of "cloudy" or "blue tinted" eyes. Any other signs of pre-shed

and 3. any suggestions you want to give=) hit me i'm game.

the only way to get him to be tamr is to just keep holding him and let him get use to you. And the eyes are normally grayish, but when they are about to shed their eyes blue over pretty much like any other snake. Its natural for young carpet's to be nippy, but he will grow out of it if you keep working with him.

The same things as said before. Just keep handling him. Over time, as he grows and becomes accustomed to you, he will settle down. It didn't take my little one very long to settle down, some take longer and some take now time at all, and now she's an angel.

As far as shedding goes you'll know when his eyes turn blue. It will be a very noticeable change from his normal eye coloration. All snakes are more aggressive at this time, it's just a self defense measure because they are under stress from shedding and cannot see as well. Once he enters a shed cycle I'd leave him alone until he sheds. After he sheds you can resume handling him as you normally would.
