Dwarf Retic X Normal Retic Question

filez41 Dec 08, 2008 01:08 PM

I just got an adult female Dwarf Retic, she's about 9 feet and a wonderful snake. A friend of mine has a tiger male retic who is not a dwarf, and I'm putting them together this year.

My question is about the offspring, and their size potential. I'm not clear if dwarf is a recessive trait or not, or if it's easy to tell with the babies. Will they all be dwarf, 50/50, or all be het for dwarf? If it's 50/50, is it possible (easy) to tell the difference between a dwarf retic baby and a full sized retic baby?

Thanks!

Dwarfism is not a trait, like say 'tiger,' or 'lavender albino.' Dwarves are actually snakes of different subspecies than 'normal' retics, and are basically 'locality' snakes. You will likely get some snakes that are somewhere in between their parents, and some that are very much like one of their parents (or the other). True dwarves are born smaller than normals, however it depends on what locality of dwarf you are dealing with...Jampea, Kayuadi, Honey Island, etc...

So it sounds like my best bet is to keep the smallest babies and raise them up.
She is an unknown locale. The guy I bought her from decided that she was not the locale he had bought her as, so sold her as unknown. At almost 6 years old she's under 10 feet.
