Do Savvy's have a Jacobson's organ like snakes do?

Or do they smell with the nostrils, or both?

Can anyone recommend a good book on monitor biology and or physiology?

You all have been so informative about husbandry and pshycology, Now I crave information on what makes these wonderful animals function as they do.

Monitors do indeed have a J's organ. Infact alot of animals do if I am not mistaken - not just reptiles. Snakes and Monitors may just be the only ones who utilize their tounge in the manner they do to collect information.

I don't know if the nostrals act in a similar manner or if they are simply for breathing.

Maybe someone else can address that.

I just want to learn EVERYTHING about my Chomper.

His sense of smell is amazing, Over the weekend I was cleaning out the roach cage, and Chomp was free roaming in the reptile room.

He smelled those roaches from 20 feet away and ran over and started head bunting the box they were in. (Guyana orange spots)

I gave him 8 roaches so he would leave me alone to finish.

savannah monitor book by Bennett... You can find it at Pro Exotics for like $8 and it has tons of info.

But Ive heard and read that a monitors is far more advanced. Monitors are active hunters on average that seek out live prey items, sometimes traveling a good distance to do so.
I believe many animals have the jacobsons organ like was mentioned by another poster, some that would suprise you.

Please correct me if I am mistaken,

but...don't monitors prefer not to travel for prey items. From what I understand, they prefer to have food travel by them or their burrows (oportunistic) and are more then willing to save energy by eating carrion.

Yes Monitors are great, so much more interesting than snakes.

If I had to give up all my reps but one, I'd keep my Chomper
