an Eastern question

mred Dec 09, 2008 02:06 PM

My brother and I remember from childhood seeing photos of Eastern's with very clear, crisp, white markings against a very dark background. Most of the snakes we've seen for sale are more yellow or cream colored on a dark background. Any ideas as to who is breeding the animal we're looking for? Thanks.

I have always liked that pic Tony. Nice thin lines.

Tony D Dec 09, 2008 03:25 PM

I'm sure there are those who would disagree with me on this but my experience is that thinner banded animals from more northern populations tend to have the best contrast. Wide banded specimens with clean white and jet black are the exception not the rule.

Tony, the northern populations will generally be blacker. See if you agree with this...
ON AVERAGE-
the closer you get to the coast the whiter the whites.
With the exception to that rule being SC which are all kinda yellow/cream.

peebee Dec 09, 2008 10:40 PM

I've found & read that the chains from close to the SC, GA & southeastern NC coast tend to be browner than those from farther inland.

Incidently, the biggest chains I've seen have been the ladder patterned, brown ones from GA. Not my faves, but very impressive nontheless.

Phil, that is one of the pretiest easterns I have ever seen. How big was or is the snake?

VICtort Dec 10, 2008 12:31 AM

Dear Phil, that is perhaps the most beautiful L.g.getula I have ever seen, absolutely stunning, the almost Indigo/black and contrasting wide white bands make it a rare beauty. I have been trying to say NO to any more snakes, but I would have a hard time saying No to such a specimen. Thanks for posting, a real knock out...Vic H.

An old Eastern of mine from Jacksonville downing a copperhead.

Gotta get some new pics of my South Carolina, Jasper County Easterns here soon.

Tony D Dec 10, 2008 07:24 AM

Is that Howie's Pungo Ridge line? Sure looks like it. For wide bands many of them have excellent contrast.

Unreal. Those last 3 are stunning. Don't get me wrong, they're all great but I really like the contrast and bold chain pattern. If only you shipped to the frozen great white north

Those are some great E. King pics that have been posted. Here's my male VA Beach locality - my female has thinner white bands.

FR Dec 10, 2008 08:28 AM

You folks posted some dang beautiful kings on this thread. I think I am like the original poster, I like the Classic "Eastern".

And Tony, that one you posted, I would like that one. hahahahahahahahaha Of course there were several on this thread I would love to have. Cheers

Tony D Dec 10, 2008 08:37 AM

That snake was possibly the best "classic" eastern I ever found. I left him as I found him unfortunately a year later the site was bulldozed.

The population was very unique in that 100% of their cb neonates took to f/t pink mice on the first or second try. Typically easterns take some work to get an entire clutch solidly on domestic mice. Fortunately I did move a few pair off the site and into the hands of some locality breeders so they are out there.

Pic is of one of the clutches I produced.
