Those who breed Hondurans

brien224 Dec 09, 2008 08:24 PM

I love the species, and was thinking about breeding them. Since they are very popular, and prices are still pretty high for colubrids, I may be getting 6 proven breeders (2 male, 4 female). I have researched their care, and even have the new REPTILES magazine that features milk snake breeding. I will have them in a rack like system with heat pads and tubs. What size tubs should I keep them in? Will 30 qt. be enough per snake or should it be more? Also, with this number of females, I should expect, since they are proven breeders, and if everything goes well, to get between 60 and 100 babies right? Any other tips would be appreciated.
I may be getting:
1.1 Tangerine Albino
1.0 Anery het for hypo, has sired vanishing pattern hypos
0.1 Hypo
0.1 Vanishing pattern Hypo het for anery
0.1 Double Het, anery & hypo. When bred with the anery het hypo male there were vanishing pattern hypos in the clutch.

We use 41 qt tubs, but the 30 qt tubs should be ok. I don't know if you are going to get 60-100 babies out of 4 snakes. I think a more realistic number for one clutch might be 16-40. If you double clutch them maybe 30-60 might be a more realistic range.

I'd use some sort of heat gradient. As far as tub size, 32 quart is small, but I know people who use them and are successful. I like bigger boxes though.

Hondurans don't always double clutch, but I'd be looking at 8-12 eggs per clutch as an estimate as what to expect. I've have some Hondos drop very small clutches of huge eggs, while others drop what I'd consider to be normal-sized eggs.

Thanks! This isn't the best shot (he won't stay still), but it gives the general idea:
