Garter snake in December!!!

snakegal123456 Dec 10, 2008 04:41 PM

This snake was seen by the Tuesday morning birding group i go with. It was near Beaver lake in Victoria Canada.I've seen garter snakes every month of the year this year other than January and November. Usually here I've only seen them mid March-mid October. This is a full month earlier than I've ever seen one. also saw a new bird I hadn't seen this year: Green Heron which was the whole point of going to Beaver Lake. So good birding and an unexpected but greatly sppreciated reptile(well a couple of the birders would,ve probably been happy to skip this guy) He was also fairly larg at around 2nd a half to 3 feet.

...10 years ago, that is. Found this little guy on December 2, 1998 near Mankato, Minnesota. Daytime temp: 62 degrees F. Up until that date, we still had not had a hard freeze, and barely a first frost. This is the latest date of the season I have ever seen a wild snake outside around here. (Ahh...the old days. Remember 'Global Warming'? Good times) Cool find for you! What were the conditions like?

Well that was the funny thing it was probably equal to around 40 degrees and it hadn't got aboove 50 in a week with once below freezing. It was also pouring rain that day. So it wasn't even nice out. Maybe something distubed it's hibernation den?
