g weight on hatchling vs yearling Hondos

hogsandpythons Dec 10, 2008 09:15 PM

What might be a typical g weight on a well started 08 hatchling Honduran by now? I'm guessing this might be even more variable, but what would be a healthy weight for the same snakes after their first year.

I'm being offered a 1.1 pair of Hypos that are said to be from 2007 and they are 45/37 grams respectively, which appears small to me, but I am not to familiar with hatchlings. I appreciate any help!

I rarely weight snakes and insteat go by sight as to what I think is about right for the species but out of curiosity I just weighed a couple yearlings hondurans. It's hard to say what a typical weight would be for an 07 honduran as it could vary greatly for a healthy one but anything under 50 grams would be fairly small for a yearling. I have a yearling that was a terrible feeder the first few months of it's life and it is 74 grams now. I have a couple others that are in the 110 gram range and they have not been fed heavily at least by my standards. It is easily possible to get a yearling hondo much larger than that if fed a lot.

Thanks Randy, I really appreciate this response, especially that you included weights from your collection. I am mostly concerned that this pair, at least the 37 gram female, is an 08 rather than an 07. If it is possible that it was just a very slow starter, that wouldn't bother me as much.

Is it likely that a 37 gram female that's being called a great feeder on fuzzy mice is more likely a well-started 08? I have male hognose snakes that are 50 grams in a year.

If it is common knowledge to any of you what a general range for an 08 Honduran weight is in grams, please let me know because for the life of me Google isn't giving me a thing. Thanks!

Randy pretty much nailed it.They will vary across the board in weight.
I went in and tosse a couple on the scale for giggles and a average on four or five of the (08's) was 44 grams.I also averaged 132 grams on five of my (07) holdbacks.I only feed once a week if not just every 10 days.By no means are my snakes big for there age I just don't have enough time or rodents to power feed hundreds of snakes.
Back in the day ( before I had a gram scale) I would get hondurans up to breding size and weight (4 to 4.5 feet) in one year. Now looking back they would have been in the 300-400 gram range. That was feeding every three days like clock work.I just can't do it anymore.

Anyway, if that pair is really that weight and they are (07's) I would pass on them right away. You would most likeley put the food to them and it would come back up unless itr was very small meals and increased really slow.

Good luck,
Shannon

Lets Just say that these 07s are late double clutched hatch snakes that would mean they are still older then a year. My lightest snake from last year which is a male is around 90 grams and my heaviest/oldest is around 135grams. 45/37 seems very low to me.. Can you find out the date when they were born??

Hope this helps,

The guy that is selling them is claiming they are 15 months old. My first instinct when I saw them was that they are 08's. He claims to have purchased them a few months ago at a show as 07's. This was exactly the information I was looking for to back up my instincts ... and just in time. Nothing like a great forum! Thanks all Adam
