Honeywell Thermostats

danthebugman Dec 10, 2008 09:44 PM

I was killing some time today at Home Depot and ended up in the isle looking at a bunch of thermosats for your home. While standing there it occured to me if these could be used to control my Flexwatt tape?!? It seems to me, though I could be wrong and it wouldn't suprise me any, that since they're capable of controling the heating in your house they should be able to handle Flexwatt. My only thought as to why they wouldn't work is that you'd have to rig up an external probe to go on the Flexwatt.
Has anyone tried using one of these? Is it even possible?

Thanks,
Dan

They are for air sensing. Some have an integrated circuit that is the sensor, so there is no hooking up a remote probe.

Also, the output of those devices is either 24 VAC or a millivolt level signal. The 24VAC signal can be converted to something useful by employing a mechanical or solid state relay.

So with modification, you can use those home thermostats for air temperature sensing, but not for surface heat sensing. My advice - a Ranco or Johnson Controls thermostat is better suited for herp applications.
