Zeek's Bad

medyssa Dec 11, 2008 02:06 AM

I have been worried about zeek lately but I think tonight might be his last, he has been refusing food recently, the last time he ate was at the beginning of November and that was just one hopper. Before that he ate at the end of September. He has always been a finicky eater and I recently moved so I thought it was because of that. He had also been soaking a lot, but reading a thread about another BRB soaking a lot I didnt think to worry. Yesterday I checked in on him and he wasnt soaking, was active, was flicking his tongue and moving around the cage, I bought him a mouse today to try and feed him, but when I brought him out of the cage he was lethargic and looks really dehydrated, I carefully used a bird syringe feeder to give him water and he perked up for a bit and then got worse. I dont have high hopes, I am trying to get a hold of my snake vet but I dont think he will get to Zeek in time. I dont know what to do! My baby!

Hey Jess,

Sorry to hear about Zeek. I'm at a loss as to what's going on. Of course the basics, temps, humidity, water, food etc.

One serious piece of advice, if Zeek does not make it you need to get a necropsy done. You've been losing BRB's at an alarming rate. Could be coincidental but then again, you could have something more serious going on.

I hope I'm just being a worry wart!!!!!

yeah I am afraid of the same thing, too many of my snakes have died recently, I dont know if I can afford a necropsy though. I dont want to have to think about that right now. He seems to have perked up a bit again since I started holding him close to me, his cage is at the right temp and humidity, but I set up a sauna-type container with just a damp paper towel and a heat pad underneath and see if that will help until I can get him to a vet tomorrow. If I can then I'll be returning Christmas presents or something, I dont care, I want Zeek more.

Assuming you're in still in the general area, I take mine to VCA Crocker. On Jackson ave, Hwy 680, McKee exit west, then north on Jackson. I'm drawing a blank on the Vet's name but he's done well for me the few times I've needed one.

Sorry to hear that Zeek isn't doing well. I hope he pulls through and this is just stress from the move.

Zeek died probably around 5 this morning. I didn't think there was anything I could do, I had hoped I could get him to a vet but even then, I think the vet would have just looked at me home.
I should be hearing back from my vet this morning about if he can do a necropsy. Everyone else is fine.

So sorry to hear that Jess, it really sucks!! You are doing the right thing getting a necropsy, now you need to see if you can find out what went wrong and protect your other snakes.

Yeah I am still waiting to hear back from the vet that you recommended for my corn snake when he got the weird infection. I guess the vet has to ask me a few questions over the phone to see if he can perform the necropsy.

So sorry to hear that hun! It's so hard to lose one. A necropsy really is the best thing you can do now. Prevention is key for the rest of them now!

My roommate was wondering if there was a chance that my bird could have given my snakes some sort of weird parasite, but I dont think things like that usually transfer between two such different animals. Any ideas? I have had my bird since about a month after I moved into my new place. I didnt quarantine the bird.

Possible but not very likely. IMO better to consider your feeder rodents as possible source of the problem. Many rodent breeders use cedar shavings.
