Confused about "Normal" Spider Sibs

hayseed Dec 11, 2008 10:27 AM

OK, I'm a little confused about something. Maybe some of the experts here could clear this up.

I have seen many "normal" sibs from spider crossings that are not quite spider but kind of "spidery" or "spiderish". Why should this be? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Spider is a dominant trait. So doesn't that mean the offspring are either spider or normal...nothing in between? I was under the impression that a Spider crossed to a normal should produce 50% spiders and 50% normals. But these normals should really be just normals. Are the "spidery" normals, maybe actual spiders but just not very impressive expression of the spider phenotype? I'm posting a pic or two of one that is making me wonder about this. She's a "normal" sib from a spider crossing.

Am I crazy? Are their really "Spiderish" normal sibs from spider crossings? Are these just normals that have extra nice pattern and have nothing to do with the fact that a parent was Spider?

Any thoughts on this?

Yeah they are just nice reduced pattern normals. I've got a female that was a spider sib and the reason I ended up with her was the clean reduced pattern that she had. Now the pattern is genetic but they aren't linked to the spider gene.

you can tell the difference between a spider and the ones you posted or any other normal.

spiders have............clear belly, green/amber eyes, white sides, gold hue stripe running down there backs, odd head patterns.

normals are like humans......they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, patterns.

odd head markings and amber/green eyes

I would say the reason you might be noticing spiders throwing reduced pattern normals, are that most people selectively breed spiders to reduced pattern animals to remove the spotting and clean up the patterning.

Its along the lines of using reduced pattern animals with the clown genes to create what some call "Wicked Clowns" that are dramatically super reduced pattern.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Well, I guess what I meant by "Spidery" was the reduced pattern and a little lighter on the sides. You must be right that this is from Spiders often being bred to reduced pattern normals and such.

Thanks everyone. I'm happy to learn from you all.
