Zeek update

medyssa Dec 11, 2008 02:59 PM

I just spoke to the vet from VCA Crocker, really great guy he spent about 15 minutes on the phone with me contemplating different things that might have gone wrong, but in the end we couldnt figure anything out.
The necropsy would be $300-600 and thats just not possible for me right now, so he asked me to just keep an eye out on the rest of my snakes for the same slightly-odd extremes of normal behavior that Zeek was showing and give him a call.
Thanks again, Dave, for the recommendation. You rock.

Anyway I just wanted to put a few pictures up in memory, I am going to miss my favorite.

I'm very sorry for your loss, especially since Zeek was really spectacular and interesting looking (and that name is really fitting, too). Does his sister Isis at least look similar? Hopefully it was just a freak occurrence and nothing else happens to your other guys, I'll be crossing my fingers for you.

No, sadly Isis looks nothing like Zeek, totally different snakes in all ways. Isis will eat anything....including two of my pet birds....she looks more like their mother, Copper, who is a deep brownish-red. Here are pictures of all three.
Copper-Mom is in the first pic, then Zeek, and Isis last.
Isis gets amazing white walls at night that go all the way up to the circles on her back. Her color is nearly as good as her moms. I tried selling her at one point and now I am really glad I didnt.

Noah and Cleo were the parents of Zoey and Ziggy, I have stayed in contact with only one other person who bought from that litter. Now its up to you to see if those genetics prove out.

Jess, first off, very sorry for your loss. It hard to lose a pet, especially when their isn't any obvious reasons for.
I have a recomendation for the necropsy, I don't know where you live but you should check if there are any vet schools around that do them. There is one out here that does them very cheap. It's been a few years since I had one done but the last one they only billed me $25.
Anyway might be a less costly alternative that gives you some peace of mind.
Good luck,
Milo

Hmmm, never had one done so was not sure how much they cost.

I guess all you can do is watch.

Zeek sure was a looker, so sorry again for your loss.

I had one done at my vet here is SD a while back. $43. It was just to look at her an look at swabs of her insides on the microscope, but it was effective. If they turn up anything weird they had to send it out for tests. We ended up doing a histopathology on top of that, which was around $150. If it's a parasite, though, they should be able to do a stomach swab and tell you for the original $43, and then you'll know if anything looks weird. I think it is important to get a necropsy done and you should keep looking for a vet that won't overcharge. I wouldn't pay $300 for a necropsy either. Good Luck! And, of course, again, so sorry!

Again, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm also sorry that a necropsy costs so much. I hope everything goes great with the others and this was just a fluke.

Sorry for your loss...First I lost my first BRB late Thanksgiving night, then Snakesitter a couple of weeks ago, now you.
Let's hope that things really come in three's, it sucks for us three, of course, but hopefully nobody will lose another for a long time!
