MITES!!!!!!!!!

hiimsteveduh Dec 11, 2008 07:46 PM

Ugh, I found mites on two of my ball pythons yesturday so i checked them over and picked stuff off and soaked them plus sparayed the cages with prevent a mite. Then i checked all of my snakes and didn't see any more mites. But then when cleaning my kenyan sand boas' cage i found more mites. So agian i sprayed the cage and soaked the snakes. But no mites came off in the water and i didnt see any on the sankes. Why would i see mites in the cage and not on the snake? And Also i decided to spray the rest of my cages and snakes just to be sure. Should this kill all the mites?

make sure to get the areas surrounding the cages and all the corners and creases n the cages their eggs are verry hardy. i used Nix ( for human hair lice) heavily diluted with water and it worked.

Ok, I'm just going to tell you what treatment works for me if I ever have a mite problem. It's almost always from a new animal so keep your new ones away from your "good stock". I recommend 90 days or whatever you want. If you ever get mites, take that animal away from the others and TOTALLY clean the cage with Natural Chemistry Mite Relief and wipe the animal down with that stuff. Do that every 2-4 days for 1-2 weeks and they should be gone. But I don't end there, I re-quarantine the animal until I'm absolutly positive it's clean. Also the first time I end up getting mites, I think it was from a ratsnake I found in the yard. If you ever handle reptiles please clean your hands before picking up another one. It'll save you time and money in the long run. The only product I've ever used is the Natural Chemistry stuff and it seems to work great.

ugh...i understand..i have the 3 and one has them and the other 2 dont seem to. so im going through the same thing.
at one point i had the two younger ones in the bedroom and the bigger one in the other room. i was going to move everyone into the other room so that i can make sure they stay nice and warm. but i havent moved her in there because of the mites. and they just seemed to appear over night. i mean, a few days after i got her i noticed 2-3. and i got them. and then nothing for weeks now, and then just the other day they were there. BAM!
so i soaked her and took out all the substrate and just put down papertowels, which i have been changing daily. i got some of that mite stuff you can put on them and their cages. i have already given her a spray and i plan on doing it to her cage too while shes eating here shortly...
good luck to you with yours. good luck to me with mine..lol

Soak, Soak, Soak!!! Make sure you give the snake plenty of water so that they can soak, if you have a spare cage flip them over to that. Soak the cage if possible mites can swim!!! So soaking is very helpful, they also dehydrate the snake so soaking can be vital. Prior to placing a new cage put the snake in a tub filled with a sallow lukewarm water, please do not drowned or cook the snake, it is better to be a little cool then to hot. If the snake makes drastic moves to get out of the water when you put it in your temps need adjusting also the snake should sit fine in the water and not have to swim. You can use what ever anti mite stuff you want but keep the snake hydrated and separate from all others. Keep cleaning the empty cage, Mites lay eggs it may take those eggs a few days to hatch, they can last little while with out food, blood, so keep washing. If possible I would not recommend using the cage again for about a month if possible and keep cleaning. Mites can live up to 2 months if climate is right and they have a good food source.

Just my thoughts, good luck,
matt

Everyone seems to be doing better now, i havn't seen a single mite since last friday. And it turns out the mites didnt even come form the pinstripe at all, they came from my kenyan sand boas. I checked their cage and there was a huge colony of mites in the bottom of their bedding that i never noticed. I have no idea how they got mites, because i have had them for aobut a year now and they have been clean up until now.
