infertil eggs

Tom_AF_Guy Dec 12, 2008 04:03 AM

i was wondering, ive got an adult pair, bout 2 years old each, a few weeks after i put them together the female started laying eggs every 2-3 weeks, i thought all was well and fine. turns out every clutch shes been laying has been infertile, so i seperated them for a few weeks, hoping when i put them back together that might spark a succeful breeding, well, she laid just a few minutes ago, but the eggs feel squishy and rubbery like, most likely infertile again. whats up with that? anyone have a similar probem before? and what do i do to fix it.

There are many reasons your eggs may be going bad. Temps to high or to low, too wet or too dry incubation medium, no air in container. Infertile male.
The eggs are soft right after she lays them. You can not tell if they are fertile for 2 weeks after they are laid, at which point you carefully candle them. What I do is let her lay and bury the eggs and leave them for about 2 hours or so as they harden a bit, then i carefully uncover them and mark the top with a black marker. When you transfer them make sure you pick them up and place them in the incubation container in the same position they were when she layed them. You also have to put them back exactly the same way after candling them. If they get turned sideways or upside down the embryos will die.
If this is the females first breeding season I have heard they might not get the mixture right and I would try again next year. She will continue to lay this year because she only has to breed once per season to lay all season I would keep incubating them just in case. GL

im guessing its inexperience on both the male and female, its both of there first season, ive succesfully breed leopards, and many other species before, but with leopards i started with a proven pair, so, they knew what to do, heh. thanks.
