Too much water!

alicecobb Dec 12, 2008 04:40 AM

What do you use for a water bowl for your large adult female ball pythons that doesn't get tipped and spilled all over your substrate a few hours after you clean the cage and fill the water bowl?

I know we've had this discussion before, but it's been awhile and I'm trying to find some new ideas. Thanks for your help.

Alice I use 4" ceramic crock water dishes and I place a 16oz. deli cup inside the dish.Haven't had one spill yet,and it makes it easy to change out their water.

Most of my girls will soak if given the opportunity. I have a 9in ceramic bowl that works great. Even my 3500gm girl can mostly fit and they have never tipped it....

Here is Daisy (1900+) - she soaks her whole shed cycle if I remember to put the larger bowl in.

I use dog sized ceramic bowls. Nice and heavy. Never get tipped, by anything the size of a ball or smaller.

4" PVC coupling with a 16 oz deli cup inside. Almost impossible for them to tip over.

Hi Alice,
A lot of keepers use a deli cup inside of something but I am cheap so I use something that can be washed and reused. LOL I use 4" Stoneware Crock Dog Dish (Ethical 6114) in my adult enclosures and the 3" Stoneware Crock Dog Dish (Ethical 6113) in my hatchling enclosures. Here are the links to the ones I use. They have the best prices on them in bulk.

The picture on the web site is of an older model. This picture shows the ones they are sending out now.

Ditto Albey! I use exactly the same crocks in both sizes. They rarely are tipped and are easily cleaned. I use a little bleach in the soapy water when washing them.

Alice, I use the ARS CB70 tubs w/ the water bowl built it in with my Reptile Basics racks. They fit perfect and theres never a spill.

I dont know what it is but even in my 32qt tubs I rearely get spilled bowls but in the last 2 days Ive had 3, maybe its in the air.

I found some dog dishes at petco on sale for 1.50$ and they have a very wide base so they don't tip over. Heavy crocks work well to.

I use stainless steel adult dog size bowls and never had one tip over!

Hello Alice,

Although the ceramic crocks do work well....

We have used five gallon bucket bottoms (cut to size) for water bowls, with great success. They can be cut to fit into your rack system. With the correct height...you will never have a problem with them being tipped over....and your snakes will still be able to drink and soak in the "bowl".
They are wide enough that they never tip in a rack. And they will accomodate a fairly large female ball who is looking for a good pre-shed soak.
The best part....they are CHEAP!!!! Most home improvement stores will offer them for about $1.50-$2.50 each! Just cut them to size. I've even used old laundry detergent buckets.
(Wash em out good...and recycle them, rather than add to the garbage!!!)
We use a hand held rotary tool for cutting them. It is called an Angle Cutter. It makes cutting a breeze. No sharp edges.
(The rotary stone of the Angle Cutter takes care of that.)
Works for me. Hope this is helpful.
Take care....and Happy Holidays!

are perfect.
I have a ARS 7030, and it's actually impossible to knock the water over, unless the rack gets knocked over. If that happens, you have bigger problems.
The tubs are 33" long, 5.5" tall, and are a standard size.
They have smooth bottoms, rounded corners, a built-in deli cup holder, no ribs, are very thick and tough, and are way cheaper than the 'freedom breeder' solid white tubs with windows in them.
They also are very easy to clean, there has to be something like a coating or something on them, because they are non-stick. Maybe it's how they're made, I dunno.
I think they're 'CB-70' sized, and I highly recommend at least trying one if you have a rack that uses 'CB-70' size tubs.
