New Iggie!

lsorrent Dec 12, 2008 12:53 PM

Hi all,

I'm new here and I just got this guy 2 weeks ago from the NY Reptile Expo. He was sold to me as a Cuban x Blue Iguana. I guess that would make him a Lewisi/Nubila? I'm trying to get all the info I can, but I also want to be sure the info I'm getting is actually right.

His head shed last week and now he's starting to show a little more blue on his head and neck.

If anyone could shed some light, that'd be great.

Now without further adue, I introduce, Brody!

what kind of light do you want shed. husbandry? info on hybrids? origin or natural history? If its husbandry, there have been a couple posts recently from new owners. search down the forum, husbandry answers are posted, unless you have something specific then...

Well first I was wondering if I'm actually right in assuming he's a Lewisi/Nubila hybrid. I saw the thread on them, and he looks like those posted, but I don't want to just assume.

I've been looking around for husbandry info, and it seems like everything I'm finding says it's similar to green iggie husbandry, except that they're more terrestrial than green iggies.

Guess I'm just a nervous new owner. I have two bearded dragons, but Brody's my first iggie, so I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. He's got his first vet appointment tomorrow morning; hopefully he'll behave.

okay, now we got something to work with. He probably is a hybrid or pure cuban but I would figure we would be sold as such. There is probably very little lewisi in him but no matter really. he has some blue in him. Go down to the nov 4th post. read that. I posted some info about where to read about care. All cyclura care is pretty much the same so dont sweat the fact that one article is about rhinos. Think more floor space and higher basking temp than greens, in general. cyclura are ground pounders not big on climbing like a green. Dont handle him for a week or 2 till he settles in and is eating and not hiding all the time. you have plenty of time to handle him. They are unpredictable till about 2 yrs old so BE PATIENT and dont freak when he does, they do that. read up they are great fun!

Believe me, I've already read and the article on David Blair's site, as well as some info on Melissa Kaplan's site and Reptilecare.com

He's still VERY skittish, although I expect that. He's a little better about us putting our hand in the tank to put in food and water, but he hisses if we put our hand near him. He's gotten about 4 baths so far since he's been here, and while he's hissy and difficult when it comes time to tank him out of his tank, he's ok after a few seconds of gentle talking. Last night actually he was sitting on my boyfriend's shoulder with no problems.

Ok two more questions:
1-Is there any way to get an estimate on how old he is?
2-Is there anything in particular I should ask the vet tomorrow? This is the same vet I use for my bearded dragons, so I know he's great and very knowledgeable when it comes to herps.

from the pictures I would guess he is last years hatch. but cant be sure. I would get a fecal done. nothing particular comes to mind to ask. What are the baths for? Too much interaction too soon is just stressful. My feeling from what I read is that you're handling too soon and in the long run they will tame faster if your more patient and let him settle in let him get used to you being in his space.

I thought I read somewhere that they need baths. He needed one the day he got home because he pooped in the pillowcase on the ride home. But I was under the impression baths were good for iggies.

Ok so less handling for now. Gotcha. After the vet tomorrow, we'll leave him alone for a while. Any inclination as to how long this should be?

Thanks for all the help. Like I said, I've done my reading, but I want to be as good of an iggie mom as I can be. The last thing I want is a 5-6 foot long reptile who hates me.

give him a week or so. if the temps are correct they are almost bottomless feeders. baths are okay they are a carry over from keeping greens. cyclura are not really big water fans.baths work as great bathrooms though. 5-6' ... maybe a green ig but not these guys, think a bit shorter and heavier. you sound like you will do fine, just slow down, cyclura hate change. oh, and welcome to the club

Hey, just giving some info on my 2007' "nubila/lewisi" baby. Ive had him in a cage that is 6'x2'x2'(should be fine for a long time). He LOVES his Mazuri pellets (I hear that this is a good diet, mixed with greens and supplement of course). I use spring mix (with no spinach), kale, dandelion greens, carrot, other flowers (occasional rose or nasturtium) and leafy greens. Once and a while(once every other week or so). I give him a king mealworm and a little fruit. I have one 150 watt basking light on one side of the cage, big water dish, a hide, a log, and stone tiles/ newspaper for the ground. I give mine the occasional shower too, I feel it helps with shedding. This guy is very skittish as well, although he still hasn't bit me.
Good luck,
-Steve
