Conservation?

jasonw Dec 12, 2008 02:15 PM

Are there any places out there where one can learn more about conservation without breaking the bank? Everything I am reading sounds like it is run by money hungry people, I understand it takes money to do things but common would there be a better turn out if there was something i/we can participate in that we didn't have to budget?

I think you're asking how to contribute to conservation efforts without spending a lot (which is a concern for me too) so here goes...

If you want to participate in conservation for as little money as possible, I'd suggest writing your representative in Congress to support responsible wildlife management. You're paying taxes anyway, might as well get your money's worth by speaking up. Now you can even go to change.gov and tell the incoming administration what's important to you as a voter - so you can write the future president and tell him to support conservation efforts!

Museums (at least the Natural History Museum in NC) accept volunteers to help with educating the public about the environment and conservation. You can do this on your spare time and learn a lot and it won't cost you a cent.

Also, not-for-profit conservation groups like the WWF and UNEP can give you info about what you can do for free. UNEP even offers internships if you would be interested in working in conservation. Note: non-profits do ask for money. It's true. But they're grateful for time as well as for money, so it never hurts to ask if an org wants volunteers.

Groups like IRCF are excellent reptile conservation organizations. Joining your local herp society is another outlet. Both the Chicago Herpetological Society and Michigan Society of Herpetologists have active programs in conservation.

Ok thank you both for the replies. I was getting very annoyed today reading websites for some places that claim conservation and they read more like infomercials that just wanted my money.

Some cheese-its with that wine. Just do what their doing but dont charge.Come on! support your local zoo.Put on a reptile expo and use that greedy money to out bid the clear cutting loggers in Central America and set up a Conservation area for people to enjoy for free.Sound like a liberal pipe dreem? Ask my friend and Hero Tim Hoen of Maryland who puts on the Mid Atlantic Reptile show.He used the money to buy over 3,000 acres in C.A. for local substained use.He could have been stink'in rich. IRCF is a wonderful organization. They have been guest chatters on our site before and Kingsnake has supported them greatly in the past.

It is hard finding a reliable non-profits, I do understand that, but all three of these organizations practice what the talk about.
