NagyReptiles May 24, 2003 08:49 AM

I would like to know what species of tegu is best for novice keepers? Now I will say that I have experiance with monitors, I have keep nile monitors for a long time and I want to get into tegus. Any good websites on thier care will also be apprecated.

Thanks Darryl

There isn't much difference between the 3 common tegus (reds, Argentine B&W, and Blues). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how nice they naturally are. One of mine only bit me the first time I tried to pet him, the other one never had any inclination to bite. Columbian and dwarf tegus are usually more skittish. One more thing don't be surprised if your new tegu comes out only a few hours a day.

What is the difference between the B7W and the Blues?

Size is the biggest difference. Argentine B&Ws can get up to 4 1/2 feet where the blues are a more modest 3 1/2 feet. Check out www.bluetegu.com for a site on the 3. http://www.agamainternational.com/ for good Argentine B&W.
