Rat or Racer?

Rowebert Dec 13, 2008 08:42 PM

I tried incubating this egg this fall and failed. I'm interested in knowing what nest I discovered.

My guess would be ratsnake! Where was it found? Jeff

I agree. I think it was a ratsnake, possibly a cornsnake depending on where it was found.

As Chris said, it's either a rat or a corn depending on where you live. A young racer would have rounder spots. Young Rats have spots that I have heard described as being shaped like"flying squirrels". I can definitely see a good flying squirrel pattern in the spots farther back in the photo

I found about 6 eggs in a rotted fallen tree in early fall late summer. I think it must be a rat because the eggs were about 1.5 inches. Next year I'll make sure to use vermiculite instead of coconut husk for to incubator substrate.

rat snake - obsoleta

That would be a black ratsnake. At first I thought it looked like a Texas rat, but those don't live in Kentucky. I've caught black rats in that state with a heck of a lot of pattern, which made them look very similar to a Texas rat.
