shell infection HELP!!!

noori Sep 08, 2003 09:34 PM

PLEASE HELP I'm at the end of my rope!!! When I got my Russian three years ago he had a small scar on one of his scutes that was just missing the top layer of the shell. This May, I noticed that the shell layer was chipping off around the scar, and took him to the vet. They chipped off all the loose shell layer and gave me an iodine solution to spread on it every day for two weeks. Well, as soon as the treatment was done, the shell was chipping up again, so I took him back, and they chipped off a lot more shell (the area is now like an inch by half an inch, and almost all of the scute is now missing) and gave me some nitrofurazone to put on it, plus some antibiotic pills. It's not shell rot yet, the shell underneath is only slightly soft, it doesn't smell either. Anyway, the infection seemed to be stopped (this was July when he last saw the vet). My sister (I'm away at school) tells me that his shell is chipping yet again!!! I don't know what to do, is the vet doing something wrong? I hate to see more of his shell chipped off. What is going wrong?

if there is no moisture or bleeding and the shell is dry, There might be nothing to worry about. Imports often come in with a kind of septic infection that heals on its own. Then, when a new layer of keritin forms the old stuff chips off. This happens in burn victims and where there has been trauma to the shell. They can loose a good portion of the keritin covering the shell.
