Water Cobra

SnakesAndStuff Dec 14, 2008 01:24 PM

Tom Crutchfield said he was sending up some small water cobras to Randal, we opened the box and this was inside... maybe he's trying to kill us? :D

That is the 2000 female I raised her from a neo.
She is very gentle and will never bite, unless provoked possibly.
Truly a friendly cobra.
The best cobra anyone could own!
I wish you good luck breeding them!

ldblawson Dec 14, 2008 02:23 PM

Yeah Bobby and Randal, I remember spending hours at Bud's (The original owner the the snakes) and we never had had to use a hook, they were alway tame enough to free had.

Randal, you look terrified, but for good reason
if your not used to dealing with snakes this deadly.

SnakesAndStuff Dec 14, 2008 02:41 PM

That's not a look of terror, that's a look of straining as he's holding up a huge snake at armslength!

TexasReptiles Dec 14, 2008 02:49 PM

naw, the look of terror is when I run into my ex-wife.
damn snake bent my hook! LOL!

Randal

ldblawson Dec 14, 2008 03:37 PM

Ha ha. That is to funny. Be do be careful, she is a big tame girl but if she gets scared she will plant you.

TexasReptiles Dec 14, 2008 03:49 PM

uh, ok.
I don't have much experience with hot snakes.
Thanks for the advice.
Randal

ldblawson Dec 14, 2008 06:20 PM

Oh no, I know you have tons of time working with hots. But judging from the photo and my years working with water cobras (including the one holding) using a old time snake hook on a big heaving bodies water cobra is illadvised due to them having massive bodies and needing water to support them, using a snake hook like that could break ribs. The snake you are holding is puppt tame and has always been free handed Bud and myself.

Sorry if if I sounded like I was puting you down, I was only commenting on the photo.

lep1pic1 Dec 14, 2008 06:31 PM

Very nice snake one of my all time favorites .No way would I free handle such a nurotoxic widow maker such as that. But wait I would never free handle any hot.Nice snake Randal.

Randal, had I known you were inexperienced I would have NEVER sent you that pair on loan. Are you sure you won't be sceered and not be able to breed them. I don't mean you personally by the way[breeding that is]....LOL....TC

ldblawson Dec 15, 2008 03:29 PM

Wow, het Tom how are ya? I know the Randal is a expierenced Handler and breeder of hots. I was only making a observation about the photo and giving personnal info on the snake he was handling. That same snake is a puppy dog and never had a hook touch her. The advice I gave him was good , A water cobra's body and Bone make up is softer and hooking them with a oldtime harrow hook like he is using is never a good thing with the larger WC. If you feel the need to hook her the best thing to do is to place some garden hose on the hook.

taphillip Dec 15, 2008 03:55 PM

What? Are you serious?
Lawson, what natural history information do you have that backs all that up?

Breaking ribs and not having water to support the weight? I think you might be a bit confused as to what species of snake is shown in the picture... as well as the muscular structure of snakes in general. I can't see anything in your advice that was good?

i've had several that size and quite likely larger...I see no validity in anything you said.

Sorry, not meaning to offend. I would just be very interested in the information to back that up?

Cheers
T-

TexasReptiles Dec 15, 2008 04:15 PM

Terry, relax, I'm just playing with Dave Lawson.
I know that hook won't hurt that snake's ribs. When I managed Tom's place, we had many, many of those come in. However, not as large, but close. I was kidding about not having any experience working venomous snakes and Dave knew that. I probably have worked venomous snakes before Dave was born! LOL! The snake is fine Dave. Give it a rest everyone and enjoy this very nice pair of snakes that Tom gracioulsy loaned me.
I promise to keep my fingers out of it's mouth! LOL!

ldblawson Dec 15, 2008 04:31 PM

Hey Randal, I wish you all the luck in the world in breeding the snakes, I rerally do. Eveyone has thier own way in doing things. When I had them it was my expirence that hooking them was "BAD" and I had some larger then that one. I have had many, many truely huge snakes and I never use a hook to lift them only to guide them. Plus the fact that I personally know that snake and all the baabies she produced this year for Bud. Again good luck.

P.S. I have been working with hot for over 33 yrs

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Dec 15, 2008 05:10 PM

By the way hooking a large snake is NOT harmful if one is careful and understands the species being handled. After all I've handled anything and everything anyone could imagine and I've never hurt a snake yet.....TC

TexasReptiles Dec 15, 2008 05:18 PM

"P.S. I have been working with hot for over 33 yrs"

Very good Dave, we're "old-timers". I only have been working them 42 years. Full time though, in a zoo setting, for 18 years, the rest, as a private hobbyist.

Randal

ldblawson Dec 15, 2008 09:05 PM

Oh no no Randal I did mean to be bragging On how many years just informing that I am in no way a Noobie. But I always understood that you were the mammal keeper at the Littlerock Zoo.

I was curator of all animals for Weeki-wachii and silver springs for 9 years, a importer since "99" a reptile breeder, both venomous and non- venomous since I was 11 yrs old, for over 20 yrs, I keep, bred and rehabed large felines that included snow leopard, clouded leopard and Florida Pathers, at age 12 I was breeding macaws and amazons and for many years had some of the rarest Burms in captivity including the only Pair of leucistics.

So now everyone know are expierence.

I am still not bragging but thought since you posted you 2 lines of exp. I'd post mine.

I am not working to produce T+ Albino Timbers

AGAIN i WISH YOU AND bOBBY ALL THE LUCK BREEDING THOSE SNAKES.

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Dec 15, 2008 05:01 PM

I was joking with Randal which I know he knows. Randal is EXTREMELY competent in all species of venomous snakes. I know this for a fact after personally working a WIDE variety with him many, many times. Whenever I had to bag something very dangerous Randal and I did the bagging. Not just for a short time but for many years. Not only is he competent he also has been a tried and true friend of mine for longer than most folks on this forum have been born. The reason I sent them to him is because I said I was going to keep and breed them and he said he would be interested if I decided not to. I have so MANY projects I called him and said I'm sending them to you. The reason is because I know he will breed them and simply because he likes them. If he had asked me to give them to him as a gift I would have done that as well. After all, that's what friends are for and Randal is like family.....TC

Deuce Dec 15, 2008 06:26 PM

Nothin' like family. Adam's family?

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Dec 15, 2008 07:11 PM

Randal's like COUSIN IT.....TC

Not anymore, I branched out into Sponge Bob and the Simpsons. Along with Sci-Fi kicker.

On topic: My waters are calm, but if I pin them they go super crazy. Both male and female. Thrash around like a mamba. Strange.

Peace, TF

TexasReptiles Dec 17, 2008 07:13 PM

Ok, now I'm curious.
Why the need to pin them?
Thanks,
Randal

Deuce Dec 18, 2008 04:19 AM

Randal, you are a lucky dog. While I've never had the pleasure of handling one of those mf's, I've always loved the markings and body coloration. Spectacular!
