Kane Heat Pads can you?

rottenweiler9 Dec 14, 2008 05:01 PM

Can you put these underneath a vision cage. I have a retrostat, however it says not to cover it?

Yes you can if you use temperature control.

They mean to not cover it with an insulator that holds heat in, without any temperature control. A Vision cage bottom is not a good insulator, so heat will flow into it. Farm animals can lie on these heat mats - that is why they were made. It isn't a problem.

Prop the cage up with something - wood, styrene foam, etc - to a height that just exceeds the height of the Kane. You can use spacers to raise the heat mat up if needed to get about 1/4 to 1/8 inch gap between the cage and heater.

So, it should not lay directly on the cage, or are you saying if I am worried about that.

Thank you

It can, that is OK. Its just that the Kane is very rigid and thick, and so you will need to prop up the cage anyway. A little air space means you can slide the cage out without pulling the heater with it, or slip in a temperature controller probe if desired. Just a functional suggestion, not a safety issue.
