Record length corn snake

HerpZillA Dec 15, 2008 09:56 AM

OK, this applies to all snakes and herps really. I know someone has stated the corn record at 5' something. I believe teh accepted record for a retic is 32' 4". From reading in the 70's I recall they changed that from a longer length as they measured it dead and it was stretched.

So, with the 1000's upon 1000's of corns, in ideal conditions and heavier than natural feeding (in some cases) why don;t we see an occasional record being broke? I know the burm record was topped and the weight. But corns are so popular, i just can't believe someone does nto ahve a 6'r by now? All I can think of is longevity. Many people get in and out of herps. But still i would think we'd see records being broke.

Any ideas?

Good size. I have a customer that is suppose to give me a corn over 5'. They have it in a 55 gall and it goes the length plus the width and more.

Still, I would have expected a few monster snakes here and there of diff species. My blood is good size and he's an 05. I imagine he will get to 5' easy.

Maybe people just don't care much about the records? All the fame and fortune lol.

I know someone that had a corn that was roughly 6 foot in length. Sadly it dies a year or two back and I've deleted the photo of it but it honestly was of that order!

I had an acquaintance, who had a huge corn a while back. It was a snow male, and it was every bit of six feet long. The snake was truly obese too, and it was just completely overfed.

I have never seen a corn in the flesh or in a pic that even came within comparison of this animal. I am 6'1", and it had a good third of its body wrapped around my forearm near the lower part of my rib cage, and its head was on the floor!

I know a lot of you have never seen me post here, and others of you haven't seen me in forever...but those of you who know me know that I'm not lying.

Monster corn!

I suspect it has to do with the fact that people interested in larger snakes generally gravitate to larger species and not to one with a reputation for being rather small. You see this very pronouncedly in pacific gophersnakes which are normally 4 to 5 ft in captivity but the wild stock where I grew up were 6 to 7 as adults often.

I agree, those people gravitate to big species. But why has there been no retic near 30'? There was that craze of the 49' caught. It was really in the low 20s. We once had a 3 year old 16' retic, and even the Cleveland hondo king had a huge retic back in the day.

I guess people really don't care to much about those records? I'm sure a 35' retic would make a great zoo attraction.

A few of you may remember Marcell Poots or recognise his name. He used to drop in here on occaison and created one of the corn snake predictors. Anyway he had photos of one of his corns that was slightly over 6 feet long.
I saw a road-kill corn (fresh..I saw the @$$ hole run over it on purpose) that was longer then me. I'm only 5' 9" but I held it up until the tail was barely touching the road and it's head was at least four or five inches over my head.

Don't hate it when people intentionally run them over.. drives me buggers...

I have a fellow that is 4 and half foot but I am not quite so sure he is pure corn..

OT: In a few years I am hoping to see my Andean by hit 7 ft.. That would be cool..

Ever since I was a young boy, my Dad taught me to have a great respect for nature and actually have some sense of passion and love. I hate seeing a life being wasted because someone is an ass.. I can understand if something was accidental, heck I have ran over some wildlife but without the intention of doing so..

When it comes down to it, I really don;t like dispatching mice or rats for the snakies, but I know the snakes must feed as well.. But thats a different story..

Nice pic. I have to learn to narrow the spot on my meter. it tends to focus on the nearest body and the head is a bit fuzzy. Or setup more light to get more depth of field.

On the DOR with intent. yea I recalling herping a big park in NC matamequite sp? that's way off. We were looking for canebrake, timbers really. Nothing for 2 days. then all heck broke lose. turtles and snakes everywhere. Watching trucks intentionally drive over 12" peninsula cooters was terrible. We had to put down a beauty canebrake. It was hit 1/2" up on the cloaca. A bit lower we prolly could have saved it. SUCKS!
