"Blaze phase" Goins

Spankenstyne Dec 15, 2008 12:32 PM

I haven't posted on this subforum for years, but I've enjoyed the pics & info that's been put up on here for what seems like forever. So glad to have some kings again & just wanted to share a couple of pictures of our pair of "Blaze phase": goins, or Apalachicola, or Blotched, or meansi, or whatever you like to call them Kingsnakes, cleaning up some leftover pinkies. It's going to be alot of fun seeing how they change & grow.

Wow. Those are gorgeous snakes. Thanks for sharing.
Curious -- how much color do they typically retain as adults?

Spankenstyne Dec 15, 2008 06:48 PM

Good question. Seems it depends on who one asks lol.
These are my first Goins as they're not common up here for some reason (Western Canada). I've wanted some for many years but never took the plunge until these came in a few months ago. As far as I can tell most if not all the orange/reds tend to wash out into adulthood but I see enough people swear that certain lines maintain most of their colour. I haven't been able to find any photographic proof of adults with anything more than a small light peachy wash so who knows? Only time will tell.

It'll be fun to find out, and no matter what I'm pumped just to have them.

Thanks for the kind words though folks. If anyone has any shots of adults it would be great of they wanted to share them.

Here's a photo of my male "non-blaze phase".

Just awesome. Thanks for posting those. I don't know why we don't see more pictures of these guys?

On a side note I just found a belly shot of the girl from last week. The male has a mostly solid yellow/orange belly, but hers is solid back which I thought was kinda cool.

here is an adult Blaze goini:

here is an albino goins...well a cross but still cool (goini x floridana)

That adult looks fantastic, thanks for posting it. I seem to find very little history on the "blaze phase", any nudges in the right direction to look would be greatly appreciated.

Searches of various forums & just general online ones seem to reveal very little & bring up just a few pictures without any useable info. The books I have barely mention goini as well.

They originated in a high red collection at Gulf Coast Reptiles. They were originally derided as crosses to hypo Brooks kings but that has proven not to be the case as the traits (both simple recessives) are not compatible.

As Tony mentioned in his post the hypo and "Blaze" recessive traits are not compatiple. For many years some people speculated that the Blaze form was a man-made creration of a hypo brooks king and a normal goini.

Here is an ad from the originators of this trait:

Here is a pic of my male adult that I posted above as a neonate:

Here is another pic of that same snake as an adult"

Here is one of my adult female. She has spots (not as nice as my male):

Spankenstyne Dec 18, 2008 12:55 AM

Well I must say I really like them both. Thanks for the info too.

Rainer, love that big male, if they were all that nice... And did you produce that albino goini?? NICE ONE!!

Bluerosy Dec 21, 2008 10:13 AM

Yes I produced that albino goini but the original stock (my adults) came from Gulf Coast reptiles.

Nice photos. Gotta love those kings. My cali never does mind eating what others have left behind.
