Whats the best way to kill unwated litters?

LeeFobes Sep 08, 2003 10:09 PM

what i did is take about the 10 pinkies (i have a bunch of mice for my one snake) and threw them down really hard agasint the back patio, i then sweeped them off into the grass (will wild snakes eat these)?? im not trying to sound cruel, but they all die an instant death (no pain that i can think of)

umm...can't say I would want to be thrown down onto a cement sidewalk, but besides that....why don't you cut back on the number of mice you are breeding? Seems to me if you only need a few, breed less! Or, if you really don't need that many...why not just buy them and not worry about breeding at all? As far as wild snakes eating dead pinkies out of the grass off your patio...probably not gonna happen. All you are going to do is attract insects like ants which I cannot see anyone wanting to do on purpose. Why not just freeze the pinkies like commercial breeders do (pinkies do not seem to "fall asleep" from a carbon dioxide environment like adult mice do. Just a few ideas.

Why breed them if you don't want them? Why not freeze them for another time?? So many why's?...

The best way to stop "unwanted litters" is to not let the animals breed! Seperate the males and females. If you have too many pinkies in a litter, I agree with freezing the rest. You don't have to slam them on the ground to kill them. A firm tap on the skull will work. Freeze them seperately, or you'll have lump-o-pinkies in your freezer.

well, you see....they breed, and i wait until 4 weeks to seperate them, but i cant tell who is a boy and who is a girl. I have an idea how to , but i can do fully matured easy. I think the boys have the scrotum sacks nearer the bottom of the anus (like, totally away from the hole) and the females have 2 closely located holes. am i right? and trust me, i didnt want it to happen, i would have preveneted it if i had known how to tell small mice apart.

When they're starting to get hair on their bellies.. check the bellies.. Females will have nipples and males won't...

sexing baby mice
This is a pretty cool site. You are right, in that sexing babies can be difficult, and by the time the testes start to show, it may be too late! I didn't realise you were having that trouble. Hope this helps!

Why thank you! I am glad that people still enjoy the information to be found on my web site, even though I haven't updated it in quite a while.

Since I wrote that page I feel that I've become even more of an "expert" at telling genders (though I do make mistakes!)...

Brand new baby mice all have a little "thingie" that sticks out down there... boy mice have a larger one and there is an actual distance between it and the anus. As newborns I expect that I've got a certain level of error built in, because truthfully they are almost identical, but when I'm feeding snakes, I don't worry about it too much. I plan to put all the boys to be fed, and the girls to be raised to possibly be new breeders. Occasionally I make mistakes, but I have snakes that eat all ages of mice, so it doesn't really matter.

Hey!! It's the author! Cool. I do enjoy that site for it's thoroughness and excellent pictures. That's what makes the difference, I think. Having an actual live mouse as a diagram to go by. I used to raise mice as a hobby when I lived in CA, and will probably do it again now that I have snakes and am looking at mouse raising from the other end of the spectrum. Lol.

Hey Sasheena... I enjoyed your site too. As far as the sexes go, I'm getting pretty good at telling who's who shortly after birth. The little boys thingy is a tad bigger and protrudes more than the girls.

I LOVE these forums
