substrate question, humidity

ronman Sep 08, 2003 10:19 PM

im setting up a new cage for my lil mexican black king. Ive been using astro turf, but want to switch to cypress mulch. I hear this mulch raises the humidity in a cage a bit though. Could this become a problem ( i have a humidity reader, if i knew what is optimal for my snake that'd be great)

Well, I'm not an avid king keeper, but I keep mine at a moderate humidity. I would say around 40% I am not 100 on the actual #, so maybe someone can chime in if they have a better estimate. As far as the cypress, it will raise humidity if wet and exposed to heat. If the cypress is wet when you buy it a way to dry it out is bake it in the oven for a little. I've done it at 450* for about 10 minutes. That dries it out pretty good. You should lay it out in a thin layer to ensure all the pieces are dry. Good luck!
