scales look weird. should i worry?

SnakeCharmer77 Dec 15, 2008 09:05 PM

i was holding zenith (baby male) and checkin him over really good, looking for mites or anything mite like and along his side the scales look like theyve been folded.they kind of dont lay flat and they have a creased or wrinkled look about them...i know i didnt do any thing to him... should i be worried?
he just had a shed not long ago- a week or so i think it was.and yes it was complete..ive seen some of the other scales along the same side look wrinkled but they lay flat..
hes eating well, hes active, doesnt seem like hes bothered by anything. i havent seen him soaking or anything.
it looks weird so im wondering...

thanks

What temperature is are keeping him at? I've seen one that was a little too hot start doing something similar to that but can you post some pictures? I don't think it would be anything lasting, most of that kind of stuff goes away in a few sheds. Good luck!

ok the only cam i had was of course my crappy vga cell phone cam- lol but below are some pics. as far as temps. i moved him into a "warm room" after it started getting chillier. i have a small space heater in there to keep it warm. this house is older and rather drafty. so the room temps are probably kept around 75-78 or so and of course hes got a warm end with an under tank heat pad. and a cool end. i went in to take pics and he was in the cool end sleeping snug in his coconut hut eheheh...i woke him up just to hold him and take his pics...poor boy lol...

heres just a pic of him going down my arm.

heres a pic of his belly.

heres one bad pic of the scales in question. (in the black area just above my finger)

heres a better pic. just above my finger

it was funny to try to take these pics. he kept getting curious about the phone and a few times he would slide up onto it in the way. ehehhehe hes such a sweet boy. *happy maternal sigh* they are all so pretty i love em and i want more...LOL

scales are like shingles on a roof....you bend them ,they might stay that way....fat balls have alot of bent scales....and you should see overweight burms...wow....

they go back to normal after shed...then bend again when the ball bends or coils really tightly....

I've only ever seen folded scales on ball pythons that were obese. How often do you feed him? How long and how heavy is he?

I've heard it's caused by dehydratioon. The scales will crinkle just like the eyecaps. Give it a good soak every week. If the scales look folded it could be from simply laying in a coiled position for too long.

hes around the 2ft mark i think. hes difficult to measure. dunno the weight i dont have a scale to weigh him. hes been getting a small mouse every 6-8 days...i wait till hes defecated to feed him again plus a few days so that i know he is hungry. i was feeding 1 hopper every few days but i never got to hold him because he was always in digest. i try to give them 2-3days before i hold em after they eat. the only meal he has ever refused was when i did offer him a second hopper. he popped it, squeezed it then layed it down and stared at it. so i removed it after about 5 minutes. but hes a good eater so far.
i didnt think he was over-weight. hes rounded but not to the point that he cant coil or anything. you can see his general body shape-- heres a pic or two of him...

heres a pic of him when i very first got him-

heres a pic of him from a couple of weeks ago

and then one of the ones i took of him today (this is a repost of his belly pic cause its a good overall body shot)

i do plan on getting a scale but i forgot to get it when i was doing my shopping the other day...

feed bigger mice...it's time....

as someone said about dehydration...the scales will look wrinkly

if scales are sticking up and bent...they are just bent...no problems

i do :P
i feed both my babies small mice and the bigger boy gets small rats. he can take a med. rat but he looked like he had problems with that. so ill just keep him on smalls.
when i feed the little ones their small mice they look FULL for a a day or so, i can tell where the mouse is for the first few hours. but after about 3-5 days they defecate and then i make them wait another few days, like i said before. i didnt want them obese- i do worry about that.
i do want my lil girl to be huskier. ive just started feeding her the small mice...

since someone said maybe dehydrated i did give him a little swim. today it did seem to be better but not sure- he didnt want to let me check him over lol. i tried to give him another little dip but he didnt want to stay so i didnt make him....

thanks for the responses yall
