What's going on here?

Helena1 Dec 16, 2008 04:27 PM

We caught her doing this after i came home from school today. Just wondering why maybe.

Is she too hot?
She has never done this before ever. She is still eating and doing everything else normally.

Is she possibly gravid? I've seen gravid females get into some amazingly wierd positions including belly up, looking like she was dead. Each time the female was just fine.

Here's a BRB belly up, she was/is just fine - she had 30 babies inside her and was trying to get comfy!!!

I have had her in with a male for a few weeks, though, i haven't observed any breeding, I will admit that I am not around much.

I thought you were just goofing around because she appears to have some swelling going on.......but maybe that's just the photo tricking my eyes.

Helena1 Dec 16, 2008 06:43 PM

I'm just double checking with what you guys think. She is still eating quite normally: one small rabbit or large rat every 3 weeks.

I know i sound really stupid and I'm sorry for that. I'm not trying to sound dumb.

Here is another photo of her from the top (I know it looks like she has a growth or something but that's just like a fat role or crease).

If that is a large meal, she may just be getting comfortable. I notice she has the bulge right under the light, probably for the heat to facilitate digestion. In the wild when snakes eat large meals they are often able to soak in water to relieve the discomfort of the large meal. Buoyancy of water compensating for the force of gravity.
That said, if thats not a big meal, she could be ovulating.
Others know more than me on that subject.

Lets see . . . she ate a week and a half ago and it was a small meal. She also pooped a biiiiiig one a few days ago. It wouldn't make sense to me to be a meal. I don't feed her that huge of meals, she hasn't ever done this before, and she hasn't had a meal, and has pooped.

But, hey, i could be wrong. I'm not necessarily saying she is gravid, that is why at the beginning of the post i said what's up? I don't like to be optimistic like that

I'm trying to rule things out or take on other possibilities too.

My kids are around all the time but they never see me breeding either

ilovemylizard Dec 16, 2008 07:14 PM

Gravid females or females about to ovulate, will go into weird positions,

but I've also seen my males and (not being bred) females both do this occasionally, I think that they just want to 'put their feet up' and relax...

When I reached in to touch them, they immediately righted themselves...

i have heard of that too. I sprayed her (which usually gets a reaction) and she didn't move. So, i reintroduced my male to her.

jhsulliv Dec 16, 2008 07:33 PM

My boas do this fairly often. It always seems to be when they are sleeping deeply as like Heather said, I usually touch them and they jump as if startled and right themselves. I have found that when mine are like this, moving in front of the cage or even slowly opening the cage door doesn't wake them.

Helena1 Dec 16, 2008 07:35 PM

ok. I haven't heard of just a deep sleep thing. You guys have given me some awesome possibilities for her and i really do appreciate it.

Anymore ideas would still be cool! Always open to more!

jhsulliv Dec 17, 2008 09:13 AM

I'm just hypothesizing that they are sleeping soundly, I can't tell you that for certain, but it sure seems like it. Would be so much easier if they had eyelids!

helena1 Dec 17, 2008 09:23 AM

I agree. It still gives me other ideas. Thanks again!

My baby rainbow boa was mostly upside down once. I thought he was dead since the upright side was behind his water dish. But I guess he just getting comfortable.

I was going to post this answer right when you first posted and ask the question.I couldn't post though because I had to run.
The only time they might look like this and its ok is after breeding and or gravid in my experience that is.
My experiences tells me a Boa doing this(not gravid) is in trouble.
When was her last meal exactly what was it? Meaning size and color ?
(Now I know you fed a rabbit. So that rules out one problem I was considering)
Many Other issues could be causing this as well.
I've never seen a Boa do this as a relaxing activity.
If only that would've been the case.

Her last meal was a 1lb albino rabbit about a week and a half ago. She usually eats albino rabbits of that size but sometimes she will get a large rat.

What do you think it could be? She shows no signs of doing anything odd or being out of it or anything like that. She is almost completely normal. She has been in with a male. Don't forget that.

LarM Dec 17, 2008 04:23 PM

The fact that she's been in with a male makes me think She is working on follicles and possibly a better chance of some ovulation action.
P.S. I've lost two fems both in ovulation that also did this.
So its all very worrisome to me anymore.
