A Common Snapping Turtle's Menu

athos_76 Sep 08, 2003 11:02 PM

Does anyone see a problem with any of these items?

-Cooked Shrimp
-Cooked Chicken
-Beef heart f/t
-crix
-mealworms
-rosie reds
-guppies
-squash (one of my kids loves it)
-pellets (same one loves these)

The reason I'm asking is... Every time I come across a Care sheet, I see different ideas of what to feed them. I'll toss in about 6 minnows or 4 rosie reds in the morning, at lunch I'll toss in some crix and mealworms, and at night I give them each some beef, chicken or shrimp and some pellets to the one.
Now one has become accustomed to being hand fed. Or at least, if I walk up to the tank, he goes straight to his basking ledge waiting. The other stalks his prey, no matter what it is. I've been increasing portions for them 2-3 a week, just to give them a boost. I'm new to the snapper scene, but have had a RES for 3 years.

Heh, cute little monsters arent they?

Many people have different ideas about food. Its like going out and saying what humans like. I had iguanas eat chilly cheese fries, monitors eating pizzas, and some others. It depends on what that one likes. Testing certain nontoxic/harmful food source is probably the best way to find out what each one likes.

You would get better answers on the turtle forums. So you might want to post there too.
I personally wouldn't bother with shrimp. Catch crawfish maybe. And I wouldn't cook any of it.
Any Snappers I have raised have grown well on fish, earthworms, the occasional mouse (pink/fuzzy etc). Rarely veges.
While animals may eat other food items it isn't usually recommended to make them a common part of their diet.
I also have know of iguanas that ate mac and cheese/ popcorn or dog kibble....they also died of organ failure at 5 years old instead of living to 10-15yrs.
