hibernating non-feeders

myotismn Dec 17, 2008 07:16 AM

I have several 07 and 08 thayeri that have quit eating. (they all had previously great appetites) This seems to be normal with my thayeri as better than half of them usually quit eating by this time of year, no matter what I do. So i am not concerned. In the past I have just kept them out and they usually start feeding again in Feb/ Mar, but sometimes take a bit of coaxing. I am wondering if I would be better off just putting them in my hibernation room. I have been hibernating my adults since the middle of Oct and they always come out with good appetites. Anyone else hibernate little ones that quite eating in winter/late fall?

Kevin, first off -- beautiful website. As far as brumating the youngins that are not feeding, as long as they have good body weight it only makes sense. My obnoxious little ones of the serpent kind that don't start feeding by late September begin to get a regimen of twice-weekly hopper mouse tails and maybe a few pinky heads down the gullet in order to get some meat on them prior to cooling for 8 - 12 weeks (I may pull them out earlier based upon my judgment of how they are looking, thus 8 weeks...).
Can we get a shot or two of what you're considering to put down into the cool?

Thanks for the compliment on my site. I do not have any current pics. I can assure you that they are all of a healthy size and weight or I wouldn't do it. I was just wanting to see if others do this and what the feeding response is when they get warmed back up. Thanks
