How many females can a male breed?

tomsey Dec 17, 2008 04:00 PM

Just wondering about that because I will have a few extra females next Spring......and one male in particular that I would like to breed to them all......if possible.

(BTW, I did search the forums before posting. My search listed about 28,000 messages....most of them in the Geckos forum. LOL
I wish they would make it possible to search only in specific forums.)

Anyway, thank you for your help.

I just asked that a bit ago. I'm no expert, but most seem to say 4-6ish. Now I have no idea what time frame that is. I would imagine a bit more over an entire summer. Also health and age of the male. I'm sure you will get more answers which is great, as i wanted to hear more.

really....when I buy stuff I buy either 1.2 or 2.3 or 4

....that's usually 1 to 2 females per male...

I have a few I throw on 4 or more....

but usually I use like 3 to 5 males per group...like rotate 4 males through 8 or so females...they all get around....sometimes multiples per day......

I have not read others' post, so sorry if there is a repeat. I usually breed males up to 3 females. I will put him with a 4th, if I have to, but prefer not. Some say that corns only produce a certain amount of viable sperm per season. Once its used, its gone. lol. I'd rather not push my luck and end up with small clutches. Plus, I let my snakes breed multiple times to make sure the job is done.
Hope this helps

that almost all healthy males have been pretty fertile with up to 4 or even 5 females in a season. And many (but not all) were fine with 6. But around 7 seemed to be the limit for many - seemed like I saw a lot more infertile eggs when I went to 7 females or so. Of course, each animal is different, but I try to limit my males to 4 or possibly 5. However, I might try 6 or 7 females with a male, if in a pinch without enough males of a certain type ready to breed. But I would be prepared for possibly less success than with fewer females per male.

OK, most of you kow I'm a jokester, I just had to do it

But would an old 5' male make more viable sperm than a 3' corn? My thinking is no. Just a guess. But I would think if a large male had more, he would deposit more per session?

And nice to see you and Don hit the forum. It most mean all those great snakes are taking naps and making life easier for you.
